insulation

Hi all , can someone help at all?
Is there supposed to be some foam insulation ( 1/2" thick") under the carpet round the transmission tunnel?
Also does anyone have a mat/carpet set (anything in OK cond.) that i can purchase to tie me over till i get a new set through out?
Thanks Karl

The original insulation was not foam, but a sort of underfelt material. There are sellers on E-bay that have it by the roll.

ok thanks i shall have a look
Could you guys tell me whether i can replace the spherical nylon bush in situ, whether from the bottom or top (though unlikely maybe) for the gear shift lever? Thanks

Yes i see the per metre rolls of auto carpet.
I may have to look at whats in NZ though if nobody has any from a donor car.
The freight might not be worth it,that is if they would freight to me.

BASIS in Christchurch have P6 carpet - don't know what quality though.
Autodec in Auckland do a P6 carpet in loop pile - yeah nah.

Bit of both if I remember as you have to get under the car to release linkages , then through the top to pull out. If I recall you remove the speaker grill and then the hand brake/ gear lever plastic cover as well.

why not loop pile Graeme?
I have removed the plastic and yes i think by the looks of it ill get to work from the bottom too.

Most of the soundproofing is jute, but there is foam on the transmission tunnel which will probably disintegrate. Foam is not a soundproofer as such, it's an acoustic decoupling layer. You are better off using modern closed cell foam like neoprene. The better type of exercise mats work well and are easy to get.

Jute also isn't really effective soundproofing material either, it simply isn't dense enough. Worse still it holds water and rots, I've thrown mine away and used modern materials throughout. The car is quieter and doesn't smell.

Im removing the carpet over the tunnel so would be a good time to replace it.
im also underneath trying to lube the linkage that changes gears as it seems very stiff.
Ive narrowed it down to the nylon mechanism thet the bolt goes through, but doesnt seem to wanna seperate.

Another thing to replace is the vibration control pads if they are dried out and no longer stuck to the metal. These are the black are bitumen based squares and only do something if they are firmly stuck.

Modern replacements are butyl based and have far better adhesive and they don't smell of tar. Just make sure the paintwork is clean with solvent first.

the panels seem to be ok
the carpet and underlay are a bit grotty but are ok but i would still like to replace it.
i found the speedo cable grommet stuffed too
