Steering side rods

Swapped my steering side rods today, because the old ball joints were knackered. Much fun was had trying to get a ratchet up behind the road spring to tighten the ball joint removal tool. Adjusting the steering track rod afterwards was just as much fun as I remembered it being last time I had to set up the steering geometry. I don't really know why I'm posting this, other than to curse whoever designed the steering system!

As you're replacing the siderods and boots, a taper splitter is a lot easier. The ideal piece of info there, seeing as you've done the job now.....

Im about to replace the steer side rod -WOF failure. Ive removed the front ball joint with a taper splitter , fairly easily. Although when it cracked off , I got a fright and looked for the broken pieces. [nothing more than the noise]
The rear one looks a little more awkward.
I pondered on it, gave it some CRC and then crawled off to order the part. Thats where Im up to.
Whats the best way to attack this rear ball joint? A bit of a tight spot to work in.
Do I need to remove the wing/mudguard?
Heat the socket?
Have a beer first?
Any tips appreciated.

Ive just put the beers in the fridge and ordered some elastplast.
Thanks HP6

My tapered splitter is shorter than yours Harvey -LOL

That was the first pic I found, mine's shorter than that as well!

I've never had problems using it if I'm changing the rod and so don't have to worry about damaging the boots.

Just ordered the long handle jobbie -$23 nz dollars - Would have paid more!!
Can double as a weed puller in the garden for the missus.

Thats because it rains in NZ as opposed to OZ where the it only rains down with searing hot sun rays that burn the weeds and all else up. Though I guess that tool would make a cool snake catcha or giant spider squasher or a tool for killing any of the other 1076 things that in OZ can kill you.

Got the two ball joints off nice'n easy with the wonderful garden tool - just sayin.

Cool , I have to do mine too, so good posts to read , thanks guys

Karl
You can get them refurbished for twice the price of a new one.
After a lot of googling and phone calls, Ive got the side rod from Nelson Rover CC. Unless you have better luck than me.
SuperCheap Auto have the ball joint breakers

Thanks Gerald, I have one, got one from a guy in Auckland ISTR.
I also brought a tuning fork from Repco years ago, so armed with what I need ill give it a whirl.
I'm still tidying the interior first, slow progress but getting there

yes I agree,
spiders the size of a Robin, black snakes bigger than a pregnant Anaconda , guys with big hats with corks hanging down, telling the biggest fibbs ever, yes life is tough down under, but at least we have small weeds..............:D

Ozzies dont fib- they just dont let a good story get in the way of the truth.
Dont mind the oversized creepy crawlies , Its the fact the little beggar's can kill ya.
I pulled over to the shoulder on a hot day for a leak. When I drove off ,I took half the road with me . The tarmac melted into the tyres.
Country of contrast.

Now now don't diminish the size of those spiders or are you exaggerating the size of the Robins but then again you might mean Robin from the Batman series in which case I agree, those freaking spiders are ginormous, a little know fact is that the spiders in the film eight legged freaks were not CGI but were imported from OZ and filmed as they were.

Not to forget the Drop Bears and Hoop Snakes.
I have family living in Aus and I'm surprised they haven't been eaten, killed or worse in the time they have been there..
