Steerjing box for 1965 2000sc wanted.

Hi. A couple of questions.
Should the steering on a non-power assisted p6 be heavy? As in as it gets to either lock it's almost impossible to turn the wheel. I know it needs a new box because with the front jacked up you can't adjust the play out evenly. This brings me to my other question, I'm looking for a refurbished or good condition steering box but don't want to buy off eBay because you don't know exactly what you're getting, (especially if it's being sent long distance), and how honest someone is. So does anyone on here know of, or have one for sale that's in decent condition?
Thanks

I'm having mine reconditioned by AutoSteer in Chester. I have a spare one that I'm having done. If you don't mind waiting, you could have my old one for reconditioning after I've swapped them over on my car.

Hi.
Thanks, I'll definitely take you up on the offer. It would make it easier to have a spare, just a couple of questions. Firstly, how much do you want for your steering box? And secondly how much do they charge for a rebuild? Should my steering be heavy on a non power assisted p6? The last classic I had was a ford consul and the steering was quite light.
Thanks.

It all depends on what tyres you're running, and the pressure you're running them at. 165s will be lighter than 175s, but only really heavy at rest.

The pressures are as the handbook, the tyres are 165s so all I can assume is the box is worn somewhere.

I run 185s on my TC (it has the 3500 hubs and rear leading links) I’ve increased pressure to 31psi all around not just for steering but also for improved handling. I’ve run Vredenstien classic sprints for the last eight years. About to fit Pirelli CN36s so will be interesting to see how she feels with the new tyres.

The only issue I ever had with 165s is spinning out in the ice. Should be pretty light on the steering, so yes, look at the box.

Hi.
Thanks for the reply. One more question, can you recommend a company that supplies mild steel exhausts for a 1965 manual sc2000?
Thanks

If it's useful to you, you can have it for the cost of postage.
But it will be a few weeks before it's out of the car. If you want something sooner, this one is available for pennies on eBay: Rover P6 Steering Box last chance or going for scrap | eBay
The seller used to be a regular contributor on here and I've had a lot of bits from him.

I haven't had the final price on the rebuild yet but will let you know as soon as I find out. I'm expecting £100-200 arena.

Hi. I'll take you up on the offer, and when it's been removed let me know the postage. I did make an offer on the £5 steering box, but we couldn't agree on the postage. I got a price from royal mail for £7.94, (meduim size parcel), and he said the courier he used was £11. So we agreed not to bother.
Thanks for getting back to me.
Regards
Dave

Hi. I'll take you up on the offer, and when it's been removed let me know the postage.

Cool. I use Hermes (now 'Evri') for car parts. It's slow, but cheap. Sub £10 I should hope.

Alternatively, I'll let you know by PM what the costs of the rebuild are, and if you like I can get it done when I have mine done, and post to you in rebuilt condition.

I'll let you know when I know costs. Probably weekend after next.
Michael
