Are all P6 V8 heads the same? Can I replace my 1973 car’s near side head with a near side head off a 1970 engine? I think the compression ratios are different on the early engines, will this matter?
my rear mounting is pretty soft and there is lots of movement so I intend to replace is using the MGBD spares poly option. What however are the consequences of not replacing it? In the meantime, will it cause problems? Will it start knocking or cause driveline alignment problems or torque...
Thanks again Harvey. It’s actually a suffix c engine. The gearbox is our and the car is up in the air. Next job will be the Sump off and main bearings caps loosened. Just waiting for the new seal. All breathing in good order. Thanks again.
My bellhousing is leaking engine oil so I’d like to replace the rear crank seal. I did this job on my previous P6 but that was easier as the engine was out and receiving a full rebuild. my first question is whether my car will have a rope or a lip seal? It’s a 1974 V8 manual. My second question...
After some brief investigation, it seems that the problem was a simple one. The sender wasn’t properly earthed. The car has been stripped and restored and i hadn’t reattached the earth wires back to the body by the battery. Anyway, if anyone is interested, a 2000 fuel sender will work in a V8...
Ok, great, many thanks. That gives me something to go at, I’ll report back. And no, I didn’t test the sender first but at least I can check what’s what by earthing the wire. Thanks.
Thanks for responses so far. The reason I ask is that I’ve mistakenly fitted a NOS 2000 sender unit to my V8 tank. After installation, the gauge didn’t move and I assumed it was due to having very little fuel in. Now, after putting 4 gallons on, it’s still not moving and reading nothing (just as...
I’ve Only just noticed but My 1971 V8 will actually crank and start up in park, neutral and any gear. Is the inhibitor switch broken or does it simply need adjustment?
Just a quick update on this in case anyone has the same problem. Pipes removed from tank and fuel was very free flowing. Sender removed, a few bits on the filter but nothing really. Replaced engine end fuel filter but still no change. Then replaced pump with a known good one, still no change...
Many thanks for your responses. You’ve confirmed my suspicions to be honest. I’m keen to make it a reliable car to use so I’ll remove the sender and clear any detritus and have a good look/feel around in the tank. If it’s full of crud then I’ll take the tank out and do a proper clean. Then...
I recently finished some recommissioning of a 1974 V8 manual. On it’s first test run, it broke down, there was no fuel in the filter. I managed to crank it and get it running and limped home. On the next run it misfired but didn’t break down. I left the car in the garage for a month or two until...
