Correct Carpet Colour

Well now i'm totally confused, I've got a sample of grey carpet coming but the more I look at mine the more I'm thinking it might be beige afterall. I take it there's no way of telling what the colour would have been when the car was new, I don't have much history with the car, just a few old MOT's.
I hope this is not a silly question but I've just got the workshop manual and have been reading about my impending head gasket repair, I notice there was no reference to the car being supplied with a five speed box which mine has, does this mean i've got a non-standard box, this might explain why the speedo doesn't work, probably not even connected! I have checked the dial itself and it appears to be ok.

For the 5 speed , yes definatly non standard, wish they were  as for the carpets were there not sometimes trim spec labels left in the car in some hidden places? maybe worth investigation, others have found them scattererd about the car.

Looks like i've got more jobs to do then, find out what the box is, try and fit the speedo cable and look out for a trim label somewhere. That might be the first job, I need to get the carpet out to get rid of the damp, musty smell and dry the floor out before the rust sets in.

The usual box used is from the Rover SD1. The LT77 box
Check your floor corners at the front for possible water ingress before you fit nice new rugs :)

My advice would be to remove one of the rear seat backs and inspect the colour of the small piece of carpet glued to the rear wheelarch. Birch Grey is a browny silver. Mortlake is a light brown; you should hopefully be able to work out what you have as original. According to Taylor, 72 and 73 home Market cars with Ebony upholstery would have Birch Grey carpets.

The colour can't be that rare. About 4 years ago I bought a spare set of Fleabay!

Seems to me you now have an opportunity to do the carpets any colour you choose! Birch Grey and Mortlake Brown you could argue originality for either. Or try your own colour. Perhaps let the wife choose. promotes buy in to the project you know

Well decision made, i'm going for a light grey carpet, with a darker grey for the overmats which will have a light grey binding to match the main carpets. Order is going in today with about 4 week delivery so watch this space!!

Good call there Ron.

I know that Rover would never have combined Mortlake Brown carpet with Ebony trim....

...cos whenever I try to go out wearing a black shirt and dark brown pair of trousers, my missus throws a hissy and tells me that black and brown isn't a good contrast.

So there - take it from my missus! Women are always right - so she tells me.

Hasnt silver birch got a hint of green about it,uasually with a light tan cord edging?
I recently sold a good s/h footwell set, that were in a very late but rusted out,'R' reg low miles turmeric yellow car that also had rover overmats.
When I had carpets made by Coverdale I went with the close match of Jaguar biscuit to my original knackered light brown carpets.

Mortlake goes green in some conditions. Tony Bunting's car had this. He was adamant that he had green carpets until he looked under the seats!

Sorry to take so long to correct this post Nick. The original carpet in my car is not mortlake brown. They were fitted when the car was new in 1972 and are Birch Grey which is a greeny colour. It is not true that I changed my mind when I looked under the seats! Indeed the bits in the shade are all that greeny birch grey colour.

Best wishes

Tony

I had a 1976 Red 2200sc with black interior and sliver birch carpet, also I have a 1974 2200TC Almond with sandalwood interior with the same colour carpet. Which is a greenish slivery grey, with grey edging. Both are original carpet. The 1976 car has gone, but the 1974 one I am restoring now and will be making a new set of carpets for it. Hopefully I can get the same colour new.
