April Yellow

It's one of my favorites , think it looks great on a series 1 . I think there was a guy who posted on here towards the end of last year with a 4 cyl ( 2 or 2.2 cant remember ) it looked great , wouldn't know how to find it though . Think he was from across the pond . :?

Edit , found it easy :D

Honest opinion.... it just looks like Fraser's car that's been left out in the sun! Once you seen his in that gorgeous 50s Yellow, April just looks like White that's nicotine stained. Could be great if nice and glossy, but just lacks the wow factor for me. Have you thought about Willow green?

Not a fan of Willow - not sure that ever made it to a V8 - probably keep it original Tobacco. Needs to be a lightish colour as my panels are not perfect enough to do high-gloss with a dark shade. Also in this country without aircon dark colours are probably best avoided.

My favourite is Arden green from that era but it's ruthlessly revealing of wonky panels. I love early E-types in that pale primrose shade but prefer to stay original(ish). April is actually quite an odd colour that was only listed for 18 months or so. These shades were popular in the early 1960s but had largely gone out by 1968. There cannot have been many produced.

Really does "everyone" who restores a P6 do it in red? Were that many sold originally that way? I simply don't remember many about in the 1970s apart from the darker richelieu, which also I like but isn't a series 1 colour.

I do wonder whether the brown shades, white, almond and the blues account for 90% or so of all P6s from the factory or is my memory faulty?

I do love that Jaguar primrose colour as well. But can understand you wanting to stay in a Rover colour portfolio.

I think there has definitely been a big swing towards respraying P6's red, especially series 2 cars. Mine was done about 10 years ago from Cameron Green and I know of many others. The latest trend over the last few years seems to have been navy blue, largely prompted by this Jaguar Midnight Blue car in Germany.

It's each to his own I suppose. If you like April and you think it'll suit your car, go for it! I think I'm just too used to seeing Fraser's car, and am always surprised by how pale April is by comparison.

I do think the 'autumnal' shades probably were in greater prevalence back in the day. These things go through phases. In the early 80s during the first classic car boom, every E Type from here to kingdom come was done out in Signal red with Biscuit hide. Now they're all being done Gunmetal over Oxblood. Half the time, restorations seem to reflect the tastes of our time as much as they do the tastes of their era.

Cheers

Lovely colour. Isn't that a Dutch regn. though, not German? Or is it a Dutch car in Germany :)

Just wow to your original signal red car! I could look at that all day. In fact I'd probably not get anything else done.

Of course in the 1960s and 1970s if you didn't keep your car as lovingly polished as yours clearly is, red would fade pretty quickly too so I'm guessing that's why I don't remember many about - people possible didn't choose it so much.
It's surprising how modern chemistry still hasn't improved this unless the finish is lacquered. As anyone whose ever owned a "pink" or "unripe tomato" Vauxhall in the last decade or two will no doubt tell you. :)

But yes clearly fashion enters into the equation a lot on restored cars. Obviously a personal choice but it does tend to play tricks with your memories of the era. Classic cars shows for all the focus on originality simply don't really look like the streets of the time those cars came from and that's become certainly far more obvious now then when I went to shows in the 1980s.

So for me, I stay original I think. I guess I understand the "getting to love tobacco/almond/mexico" posts on this forum!

Yup, my S2 is also as per the original factory Monza Red. As a youngster I seem to recall P6's were commonly finished in Almond, Tobacco Leaf and Zircon Blue.

No TP, this was proper ribbonage! MY other half's aunt decided to give my car the once over when I used it to transport myself (groom) and my brother (best man) to the church back in 2012.

Been neglecting my rebuild lately, health problems and the cold weather, but hopefully now back on track.

Anyhow, this is the colour, one indoor with flash and one outdoor.

Sorry if anyone is upset, but
I couldn't live with Mexico Brown.

You can join our exclusive "colour " club with that .
Its going to look very nice .
Is your glass sundym as it is going to set that cloud off .
I like that

The Pale Primrose has a district green tone in comparison to April Yellow, which happens to be my favourite colour on a P6. I recently got the paint matched and a code created by BASF for their UNO paint line, which is a single stage paint. I can get you that number if you want it, though it may not be directly useable in your neck of the woods. Doing a P6 in base coat/clearcoat makes the car way too glossy, if you ask me.

Yours
Vern

Hi

On my "San Diego" thread, the April Yellow on my car appears a little whiter than in the real world, and so it is actually a bit more yellowey than it appears. But it does not look like pac man. The paint is 30 years old.

I might not be quite sophisticated enough for the color, it is very sixties and very low key especially compared to the later cars. It is not a shouter but it's pretty nice. I had aggressive MagStar wheels on it for a bit and that was ridiculous.

I have more pics if required.

Awesome car. It's one of my big regrets I never had a P6 wedding car, but as I was married in Albania, they were probably a little thin on the ground there. I know we have at least one Greek forumer, perhaps I could have asked to hire him and his car for the day (we were less than 15km from the border).

Just seen this thread. More pics are definitely welcome! You might just have sealed the fate of the Tobacco brown!

Hi Peter,
Back in the late 1970's my uncle owned a seies 1 3500 in a pale (primrose ?) yellow with black interior. No pictures I'm afraid but I remember the car really standing out from the more 'conservative' rover greens and browns etc. I guess almost an American look.
Regards Mark
