Custom Anti Roll Bar- Cheap opportunity!

So I was wrong, it has actually reduced body roll by a lot. It was me not realising that I was taking corners faster.

Peter ZRH has also raised a thought - it's highlighted that after I had the idler steering box changed over, I have what sounds like a plastic rubbing together sound, almost like the dashboard/passenger side glovebox has been taken apart and not put back together properly. It now makes this sound when I go around a corner sharply.

Sometime soon the whole driveline has to come out as there is a rattle somewhere (I think in the transmission) and if I can find someone to do it, I'll have the bar radius'd properly.
 
The biggest difference I find is the speed you'll take roundabouts.

If you are rolling as much as before then you are going a fair bit faster.
 
Have you confirmed the bar diameter? 22 mm or 24?

Normally an ARB should have a high tensile tempering which will have to be de-tempered before it can be machined and then re-tempered after. The longer the radiusing length the better.

If its only a 22mm bar I am sure the NZ ARB which is 24mm is quite cheap to get from nz to oz.

wonder if theres enough interest from Rover clubs? there are 2 in UK alone.. adding up world wide to a possible decent size order book? much depending on cost per unit with postage and of course owners whom may like to reduce that notorious roll on bends.. can't understand why rover itself didn't correct that in manufacturing ..with a stiffer anti roll bar being ideal for racing/sports /police .

I made my own out of 1" (25.4mm) hex 4140 steel that I got hardened. Trying to find a machine shop here in the states to make extras. The 25mm one is great, car feel far more sure footed, ride remains supple. I am sure the 22mm would be good too if you want to retain some of the characteristic P6 roll.

I don't recall seeing a local car with an oversize anti roll bar fitted Peter. I went down the path of uprated Koni shock absorbers and stiffer springs, and together they work really well.

Bought mine for $220 (?) from Rover Car Club of Australia (i.e. the Victorian club) assume Peter you are a member of the NSW club. Apparently made by Triggs Motors near Newcastle NSW.

Has changed the whole character of my manually steered car. Whilst still not in the class of our MX5, it is far better than it was on bends.
 
I've had one for years, 23mm Bespoke from Kmac but pricey and not the best quality, I'm replacing it with one of Dennis triggs which is actually the same diameter. They aren't milled as they should be (lengthwise - look back in the thread for pictures) but they do work well. You do have to have the car sitting dead flat and check the top arms are definitely at the same angle when tightening the bolts or they can snap. I wound up with one size up bolts and eventually chipped the bar due to stress at the mill junction. Dennis is in Newcastle so not too far from you Peter.

PS Mal supplies a 24 mm bar and all the bolts and spring washers you need to do the conversion.
 
I have one of Mal Clarkes ARBars. Cant get the smile off my face esp on roundabouts.
You will need to remove the left wing guard. Remove the old and replace with the new arb.
Cant remember the torque settings [Mal will know].
Re-torque after a few weeks of use.

the instruction sheet that came with mine suggested the removal of the left front wheel.
Being old with a dodgy back (that's my excuse anyway) I got my mechanic to do it. The retaining bolts were all he removed, I was at the worksop for about 30 minutes and half of that time was just chatting.

The added bonus was that a rattle which had been annoying me for a little time (and I thought may be due to windscreen rubbers, did replace the bottom one under the screen) was cured.The ends of the original ARB were showing signs of wear, probably due to loosening mountings.
 
Absolutely worth doing from every perspective, it will "Transform" you P6 experience of pleasure
 
Thanks guys but I might have to wait as Mal emailed me back with a price and I'm not sure I can justify the expense just now, although further down the track maybe.
 
I am surprised . The price I and Graham paid was extremely competitive c/f getting one made or bought in from OS. The bar is not lite weight, so freight from OS puts it up there. Just sayin.
 
Although it's in my project build thread, I wanted to tie up my end of things since I started this so long ago.
I bought my Peugeot donor bar for £30 and recent machining cost me £60, so I've ended up with a £90 finished 24mm custom bar.
I got a good deal as I was getting some other parts machined. I'm not sure this is actually a very economical route, another machine shop quoted £120 for the machining, and many these days wont take on such a small job.
Yes I've saved £30 over the cheapest off the shelf option, and with that got my own design. The hex is radiused and then tapered out to full diameter.
If you have a mill and aren't afraid to use it this is a very good option as has been mentioned by Tim and Gavin.
