My name is Veronica, and I'm a Roverholic.

It's Veronica and her husband Gary, here in Oregon. Gary's P6 is having trouble/won't shift into 4th or reverse. It's a '68 TC. I'm suspecting wear at the "ball" on the shift lever, as there seems to be quite a bit of play in it. Other opinions?

Hi Veronica, Welcome to the forum! If you have loads of play in the gear lever it is most likely the 'acorn' on the bottom of the gear lever has dropped off. Check out this thread on the problem. If it is the problem I would try Geoff at Wins International for a new part.

Gearlever problems

Veronica. When you say it wont shift into 4th or reverse, do you mean you cannot move the shift lever into the reverse plane or that the shifter wont then move to engage the gear ? I am intrigued in that reverse and 4th are opposite sides of the shifter gate.

I would take off the know on the gear leaver, then unscrew the metal bit off the gear lever. Then take off black plastic cover that holds the two ash trays. Then undo the three bolts that hold the gear lever, and inspect. I agree with Steve Dibbers that the acorn has probably fallen off.

The shift lever won't then move to engage the gear. It's been awhile since we looked/worked on it (raining every day and we have no garage, and another daily driver needed attention, etc excuses) but Gary just brought it up again so I thought I'd better see what you all had to say.

I checked out the thread about the shifter. Did I mention that we replaced an acorn in downtown Portland, OR once? So we could get the car home...

Will let you all know what we find.
