Hi there,
I have a new handbrake rubber boot and when I removed the original one, the small meta clips (5) that hold it on, behind the plastic console cover have been lost. I put them somewhere safe and now cannot find them....sound familiar?
Wins dosent have them so how can I hold the new boot onto the console? any ideas cant find anything suitable on the web either.

I can't remember seeing the clips as used on the P6 on any other cars. You could try these:

https://www.sdproducts.co.uk/push-on-fixes

if you get the right size they should work OK.

If not put a wanted ad on here, there's bound to be someone with a damaged console and boot that would be happy to sell you the clips. They are the same on the gearlever boot.

They are called Tinnerman nuts. Not really a problem to obtain, the tricky bit will be figuring out the right size and buying less than a hundred of them. As I recall, they are sized by "stud size".

Edited to comment that my memory was playing tricks, they aren't the rectangular Tinnerman, but a round variant called starlock nuts. Still push on though, and the tinnerman will work just as well.

They are not the same as the gear leaver boot thought, that boot uses a different style that cuts a thread on the little almost always broken off plastic studs. Which, I've just discovered, come in two sizes, 1/8 & 5/32 (the latter being an attempt to beef up those fragile plastic studs I suspect)

I've got a NOS console with the handbrake boot on it in the crawlspace, I'll take a pic. And while I'm at it, I'll find a sample of the nut thingy that they used for the gearshift boot. Then we can stop relying on our dodgy memories.

OK, turns out NOS consoles come with the gearshift boot, not the handbrake boot. So the handbrake push on nut will have to wait until I hit my storage locker. But here is a pic of the nut used on the gearshift boot.

Those are the clips I remember as being on the handbrake boot as well, but maybe that's my memory failing me. I wouldn't know what those gearlever boot clips are called, hence not being able to find pics of them on the net.

I would suggest finding an autoparts store which has the ability to mix paint. They will most likely sell various types of speed nuts and clips etc. Take in the handbrake boot and see if you can find something which works.
Also have you tried Scotts Old Auto Rubber. He might have something like that. Have a look under clips and fasteners.

Finally got a couple pics of the proper handbrake boot clip.

Thank you all for the helpful information, that is the clip that I eventually found and fitted, the 3mm one.
I had to enlarge the hole very slightly with a center punch and pushed on with a hole punch, now all refitted and looking good..

But where do you get some? I assume the old clips get destroyed on removal? Cant see 78446 on the web at all....

EDIT- who needs clips! Tried an M3 die on the metal post but couldnt get it started. Then tried a 6-32 die, and that works fine. Also have a packet of 6-32 nylocs, so we are good to go. 20 mins later all finished - turned the die once started with a socket, and ran the nuts up with a 5/16 socket. Both old and new boots had metal posts.
Why would the gear lever boot use different clips from the hand brake boot???
thanks

The gear lever boot clips fit on plastic studs moulded into the console and they screw down rather than push on.
