beam speed limits and traffic information directly into cars

Signs could be removed from the side of major roads within eight years under government-backed plans to beam speed limits and traffic information directly into cars, experts said.

A trial of superfast 5G wifi will be introduced next year to enable roads to communicate directly with cars, ultimately making road signs redundant.

Experts behind the trials said drivers could expect to see “naked highways” from 2027 as road signs were decommissioned and information was displayed on digital units within cars. It could ultimately pave the way for some traffic lights to be removed. Live on-road trials will be developed over the next year in parts of Birmingham, Coventry and Greenwich, southeast London, as well as at the Millbrook vehicle testing ground in Bedfordshire.

Sounds like a company is looking for more funding; any press release reported as news by lazy online news papers, is reported back to the idea's funders as exposure. The fact another pie in sky idea is unworkable and an untrue ambition is neither here or there.

"Naked highways", sure thing; there probably selling the idea to the government, by saying the current speed limit signs can be sold as advertising space.

By clicking on the link above I've just sent a little more money to Rupert Murdoch. He's the bloody one who's probalby told the government they can generate income by selling him the speed limit signs as advertising space.

I'm going back to the garage, where I'm fitting radio interferance HT leads, to everything.

P.s. I've already lined my bike helmets with tinfoil. I now wear them driving the Rover

Why did I reply...... beer time.

Trouble with you two boy's is you're cynical, and over the hill.......
I've just spent the day hauling out the V8 and fitting a second hand Tesla motor, what could possibly go wrong ?

Edit
Anyone got any spare AAA's ?

Some parts of the UK haven't even got 1G yet so how are they going to ensure complete coverage. More Govt b*ll*cks as H says :D

How are we supposed to look at a screen in our cars with the speed limit on when we are already sending text messages at the wheel telephoning people or watching movies on our phones its so inconsiderate obviously not thought out

Another example of doing something 'because we can' rather than having an actual need for it

It started with electric windows......

Don't know what you are all worried about. When all "new" cars have the 5G linked to the engine ECU (controlled speed, no speeding) our classics will still be manual ( footual? ) control. OH sorry ociffer no limit signal!!!

Perhaps we should get rid of the Internet and these new fangled forum thingy-me-bobs whilst we are at it... Whilst I enjoy driving the older cars from my youth I certainly wouldn't want one as a daily driver having now experienced what a new car has to offer... Electric windows, yes please, Satnav, I'll take that, thanks, aircon, certainly, sir! Traction control, crumple zones, airbags... Yep, I'll have the lot...

I suppose there are people who want older cars, but where do you draw the line? Phil mentioned electric windows as when the rot started, I'd suggest it was when cars were tall and ungainly, ran on large thin tyres, had now roof and virtually no brakes... Surely the rot started when they got rid of them in the early part of the 20thC?! ;) :D

Contrary to what some of my nearest & dearest think, I'm not a total neanderthal ;) & I'm with Hobby for modern cars' safety & abilities.

I cited electric windows because they are just one of those things that we don't really need, unless someone on here can think of a reason other than vanity or snobbery....:D

Lazyness... ;) :)

(Actually from a practical point of view they are a lot easier when you are abroad and have to lean over to the passenger side to pay tolls or get a ticket in or out in a car park!!)

I was a bit tongue in cheek as well, I enjoy driing both eras of cars, though I wouldn't like to go back any further than the late 50s, early 60s when things started to get a bit easier to live with.

The only time that I have ever used the rear electric windows on my daily driver is when it was parked up on a very hot day and I lowered all of them with the key fob to get some of the heat out before I got in. Front ones are useful if you need to ask directions, but I'm male so that won't happen :)

I do like my daily for all of it's toys, and to be honest it's more powerful, quieter, a lot faster, does a lot more to the gallon, handles better, is a lot better on snow/mud, carries more, has a better sound system, and more, but I smile a lot more when cruising around in Sparky.

talking about snow and mud, I was driving to work in the Rover 2000SC at 0600 one winter morning back in 1985, snow and ice about , travelling East along the A319 towards the M3 when the car just left the road, careered across the road wrong side, straight through trees, past trees into muddy landscape, finally came to a halt when it hit trees it could no longer get past, yeah hmmm not my finest hour but - just an hour later - the AA on scene, literally dragged the car back out of there, I did have my doubts and even more crazy - with surface damage only, then continued to work, what a dayo_O
