Future of the forum

I positively disagree with making it a paid service, and am sure that it would be detrimental to the forum. I'll fund it but leave the "Help to fund the forum" button to help - if it's still here - where is it? :)

Our works IT whizz is on holiday until the end of next week, when he gets back I'll ask him what would be involved in running a forum, as I have just been told that he already has one for some VR type gaming thing he does.

If you are about to disappear into the ether Rich, can I have my oil pressure gauge back before you go please?

Richard

Yes - it the only thing left in my shed to do with the car at all :D

Without this forum my 3500s wouldn't be on the road! (let's ignore the fact that it currently has no gearbox in it and the guts of the "known good" lt77 i bought a few years ago are scattered across my workbench whilst i replace the disintegrated reverse idler and a few other bits before i fit it to the car).

I'd happily donate a few quid every year to keep things running. This is how another forum I frequent is run (www.lr4x4.com) people who donate get a little badge on their avatar to make them feel warm and fuzzy.

The way I see it, reading here, v8forum, lr4x4 and retrorides has a lot more interesting content than most magazines do and is much cheaper than magazines even if you do donate to keep things running now and then.

Thanks for keeping things running up to now :), there are surely a lot more Rovers still running about today as a direct result.

If you shut it off to non payees i think you'd get a situation where you'd stop getting new members.
I have been rummaging around for info, and some forums won't allow access to photos or documents unless you are signed up, maybe that will be the way to go to entice daytrippers/windowshoppers to join up.

Richard, I am sorry to hear about your medical challenges, and please let me express my gratitude for the effort you have taken to make this such an easy and pleasant place to visit.

My thing is helicopters, so, beyond being prepared to chip in, I am out of suggestions beyond thanks to the members who are prepared to take over and keep it going for us all.

I must echo cobraboy's fear about the loss of information, my Range Rover go-to Forum recently suffered a take-over and the new site is a shadow of it's former self, minus the tech info, to boot.

The loss of information was already covered in the original post that Rich our admin made he is looking for someone to
take over the maintenance side of the forum he never said there would be loss of information I think you guys have been smoking to much exhaust fumes :p

Nothing in post #1 of this thread about safeguarding info. Rich kindly confirmed in post # 35 that it would be possible for the forum archive to be transferred.
I don't know anything about other threads mentioning safeguarding the archive, I have been concentrating on this thread and my posts are relevant to this thread and no other.
PS I gave up smoking !

Is that because your exhausts emit fire when you change gear?

I'll give you six months away Rich, you'll be back tapping on the door...... 'hey lads can I have a job please ?'

You wont get dirt under your finger nails strumming those guitars :p

Give it 2 years when the disks in my back should have healed and I have an idea I may buy a classic that I can get someone else to maintain. I won't be able to roll around on the floor under the car like I have maintaining it. When I can comfortably sit it will be a turning point.

It's a fair worry. This forum was invaluable to me and I'm lucky to count you all as friends. I wouldn't want anything to be lost. I've put too much into it for that.

Will you be needing a chauffeur ?
I could upload my CV for your consideration...................

I have just had a wry chuckle to myself thinking that you may be giggling and wincing with pain at the same time.

It is a sign of how well this forum is thought of that already there are willing volunteers with expertise coming forward to ensure it continues to thrive.

:) Thankfully it doesn't hurt to laugh. Bending or twisting or sitting in one place for too long hurt or give me pins and needles. I'm actually quite lucky as a lot of people with CES are left with permanent pain at all times.

Sorry to hear about your health problems Rich.
Its a good move on your part to down size and concentrate on your health. It will be a slow rebuild and you need to destress.
The effort you have put into this forum is possibly not fully appreciated by us mere mortals.
go well mate

Nothing on this thread for over a week.. We've had a few good suggestions, so maybe it's time to create a poll and see which options people would prefer?

if anybody is thinking of voting for the phpBB conversion please read my scheme (below)
I am a phpBB admin of old, here are a couple of old phpBB forums I did Windsor Safari Park - Index page UFO FORUMS - Index page they are basically dead and dusty now but show phpBB basically in comparison to XenForo which is this site.

My idea (which probably wont be popular :p ) is to get a copy of this site's XenForo's database , doing that will not change anything on here at all, operations on here continue as normal, meantime the copy is used to create a phpBB version of these forums at another domain e.g classicroverforum.co.uk (or similar) , so now you have 2 sites with very similar content , "where are you going with this?" I here you ask, well the point is that no damage has been done to this site, all members can look at the new "copy site" and see if they are content for that to "take over" , if not, no harm done . if members want this option I will handle all costs involved and set this up within 1 month but lets see what other options we get first, early days.

I have to say if members don't want this , then fine, there are already plenty more options listed above :p Rich I note you say It's unfair on you to keep on doing it when it's a reminder of what you cant do at least for a year or two. so I hope fingers crossed in a year or so you'll be recovered and have a P6 back !! gotta keep positive and we are all feeling for you
a little more detail : if my scheme is voted for I will provide Forums, Topics, Posts, Members and Attachments from this site to a separate site e.g. ClassicRoverForum.co.uk about a month after I am given a copy of the database and the site files e.g. the physical attachments

possible problems: it is unlikely that the private messages would be copied, you would find that you could send new private messages but the old ones are not found
it is unlikely that the posts going on here during that month would be copied
at this stage I don't know if the site's Gallery would be copied , in fact it is just another forum so that would be reproduced with attachments but a lot of people have images in the post itself, I assume that would still work
I doubt if the Resources tab would copy over

As I said in my Scheme intro
all members can look at the new "copy site" and see if they are content for that to "take over" , if not, no harm done .
so 1 month on Members have a review of the copy site, Rich's original site is still going too at that point so a final decision can be taken at that point in time and 'all options polled' are still available then

Appreciate your effort and offer Falkor, but going back to phpBB seems like a big step backwards to me.
If it becomes the only viable option for the forum to survive then of course it makes sense.
Jim

there will be plenty of other options in the poll Jim, we should all vote as soon as possible :D
