Rear band

Slacken the locknut, back out the adjuster a bit just to make sure that it's free in the casing, then tighten to 10lb ft, and back off one complete turn*. Lock the nut without moving the adjuster. There's an access hole in the tunnel.

This is for a used or in service band, if it's a new band back off 3/4 of a turn.

If you have problems it might be best to remove the sump and have a look because of their propensity for the servos to have seal failures, cracking, or falling off.

Thanks again Harvey, i do have problems, reverse is very hard to find but not always, sometimes it moves back just a bit ,the stops also on reversing it some times makes a grating sort of sound like its grinding on something

If it's difficult to find reverse it would probably be a bit random on the other gears as well, but have you looked at the linkage?

Couple of other questions: What's TOP gear like, and do you have engine braking in "1"?

Is this a 4 pot or a V8?

It is a V8, the linkage seems ok only driven the car at about 50mph do you think this should be in top, and no real braking in 1st This is the first auto i have had for a long time so excuse my lack of knowledge please.

50mph should be in TOP, I think you'd notice it revving its plums off if it was still in SECOND. Depending on your diff ratio and tyre size 50mph should be about 2500rpm in TOP. If there's no engine braking in "1" and problems in REVERSE that does point to a rear band/servo problem.

In the sump look for signs of a delaminated band. Rear servo: Look for signs of the seal popped out between the piston and the servo body, the servo itself cracked, or the bolts that retain it to the casing being loose.

If you have to remove the servo, note which bolt comes out of which hole, as they're different. The front one is longer with a dowel on the end to locate the centre support.

Hi just an update, i have removed sump ,cant see any signs of broken band in oil it is clean, no bits in filter either, checked all the bolts none are loose and no cracks in casing, i cant access the rear band adjuster looks like i,m going to have to cut a hole in gearbox tunnel, have you any pics you could send me please to make sure i,m looking at the correct part John

Harvey forgot to say i found out the gearbox was rebuilt about 3 years ago and has had very little use, also it has red oil, is this dextron .

If you extend a vertical line upwards from the "l" of "cyl" you will pass through the rear band adjuster.

You can't tell from the colour, the proper fluid and dexron are both red. When hot the Dexron always seems a lot thinner to me, but that's just a guess. As you have it drained I would refill with the proper M2C-33F/G.

Thanks I will refill with correct fluid, when i said pictures i meant rear servo, but i think i,m ok with that now. there is no signs of seals sticking out but oil is dripping from the bowl area of servo is this normal

You do tend to get drips of oil all the time the sump is off. If you have an airline and can remove the pipe from the servo you can use a blowgun to test the operation of the servo.

This is a pic of a dismantled rear servo.
