Hello! My dad really wants to buy a rover p6. Is he mad? if anyone has any advice, tips & tricks for soon to be new owners, that would be much appreciated! Thank you

Hi Joanne,

There are many threads on this forum about buying P6s from those who have done it (many of us have several times!).

However, a good P6 of any variant is a genuine quality usable classic for usually a reasonable price. Unless your Dad is a dab hand with a welder, buy the very best you can afford!

All the best!

Hi Joanne

What Phil says, plus, what sort of man is your dad? Is he a tinkerer, does he like to mend stuff, and I mean mechanical stuff like old cars?

Can he weld? Does he have a garage, or basic tools?

Thank you for your replies! Yes my dad is pretty crafty though I’m not sure he can weld lol.. he has a big garage and some tools also :) I’ll take a look at some other threads, thanks guys!

If that is the case then I think he will have a lot of fun with a P6. Of course he may still be mad, but at least he will be happy......... and mad :)

As the guys have said, the P6 is a great practical classic. I use mine daily doing a 75 mile round trip and it has only let me down when I have let it down. They are comfortable, can take four adults with no problem, are quick and can cover long distances easily, and you'll feel fresh as a daisy when you arrive at your destination.

There aren't many classics that can do all of those things, and probably none that can do them with such good value for money.

Awesome, thanks guys for your replies! Anyone selling?;) looking for either a black or red in colour and top tip condition :)

check out rover p6 car club forums .they often have advise what to look for when buying one (such as under rear seats!) they are undervalued mostly as majority want sexy .sports type cars or one their dads owned etc thus Fords are exceptionally costly. do get best u can afford and check out a couple first .don't buy first u see ( as I did ) ideally a mechanic check or mot before buying is a good way to se if major structural issues are there.bear in mind as its a skeleton frame with bolt on wings (and roof!) it can easily hide major issues and look great on outside. eg outer lower sills (often painted black) are NOT structural and can hide major rust issues behind. hence carpet lift to check inner sills and floor pan is essential. good luck. the ride quality is superb even by todays standards though they do 'roll' a lot on corners which can be stomach churning if not expected so handle corners with care. try and get one with power steering as a very heavy car in a three point turn and ladies would need Popeye arms at least.my wife cannot turn steering wheel at all when parked or early moving. the 3500S is seen as the top end of the range and with all mechanical stuff is far easier and less expensive if repairs needed than the standard auto box. one many avoid is the simple 2'0 litre base model as it is not high powered and will seem slow by todays standards thus possibly not giving as much enjoyment as the more powerful version eg 2200 TC .do joint a rover club too. many insurers give a discount in excess of cost of joining just for being a member.
for being a member.
