Exhaust manifold

On the 2000/2200 engines sc is it common for the manifold to have warped, last year I got a replacement manifold from a member but I keep getting leaks at the manifold. The only other issue is that the manual says to ensure that the gasket metal side faces out to the manifold but gaskets from Wadhams have gaskets that the metal is covered on both sides ,so is that relevant with these gaskets . When the car goes back to the garage I will ask them to check for any warping. Can I add exhust sealant?

I always used to coat the gaskets both sides with High Melting Point grease. You could have the gasket faces on the manifold machined flat. If it's just one that keeps blowing you could try doubling the gasket on that one alone.

Thank you for the information. When the car goes back to the garage next week i will ask them tp check how flat the manifold faces are

easy enough to check for warped face though correcting will likely need light machining ( ouch) . gaskets ought to seal correctly and not come across any that only fit 'one' side out due to facing material. though common to have to fit right way up etc . we used hylomar gasket sealer for our sealing operations on exhausts ( worked in auto industry for major car manufacturer engine test facility) this is a gel like sealer in a tube that is lightly put on surface needed sealing. excess will be squeezed out but it only needs light coating anyway. exhaust temp will carbonise it in place and any excess will then flake away. will not however seal large gaps !

can any member clarify if different types of exhaust manifold gaskets were fitted. I purchased as advertised a set of 4 manifold gaskets by Unipart that on the add were as in the Rover manual with a metal face on ones side and a fiber covering on the opposite. When delivered they were identical to pattern parts with a fibber coating on both side, the supplier is adamant that they are genuine original Rover Unipart item ,as I said they don't look like the Rover manual or the picture of the add. the shape is the correct its just the material .

As bought by me, my first P6 – an SC – had a blowing manifold gasket. Number three port I think. The car came with lots of NOS spares including manifold gaskets with a metal face on one side. I took the manifold off, replaced all the gaskets and still one was blowing. Clearly the manifold was distorted so I had it machined flat again. Now I had to use the currently available gaskets with fibre coating on both sides. They were absolutely fine, everything sealed as it should and there were no further problems. So don't worry about the change in spec compared with the Rover manual.

Hi, Don't get sucked into the 'genuine original Rover Unipart' line because they parted company in 1987 and Unipart are a manufacturing and parts logistics company (amongst other things). Use an exhaust assembly product or as Harvey suggests grease if you're worried. If the gasket is not sealing then look to the manifold and head faces.

Thank you both for the reassurance, when the car gets back from the garage later on ( or not !!) we will see, Id better explain I am a paraplegic in a wheelchair unfortunately I cant do the the work myself.
