I had a rattle similar to 'pinking' but it happened when taking the power off rather than under load. It turned out to be the crankshaft main bearings....:(

Well I took the servo off & found no fluid inside :rolleyes:, so where it went to, I don't as yet know. All has not been in vain though, because the old seal (top) has certainly seen better days: The problem now is how do I get the servo back together? It's one of the 'bayonet' fittings as...

Following the 'repair' (screw-tightening) of the heater direction & temperature controls noted above, the on/off & speed control lever started playing up. It became a lottery as to whether the heater would work. I was fearing having to take the heater box out, but then the direction lever came...

I also decided to fully bleed the brakes & replace the brake fluid. This went well until I came to start the car a few days afterwards & the pedal went to the floor :oops: As there's no evidence of lost fluid, I suspect that it's now in the servo & that the slave cylinder seal has given up...

Three of us drove through France in ‘Hazel’ a few years ago & the boot was fine, but perhaps not with four? Placing the wheel flat in the boot is a big help. (My sharkstooth 2000 however doesn’t have the bump in the boot well for this….)

Obviously "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", but boot-mounted spare wheels & badge bars really don't do it for me ;)

A friend of mine has a series 2 V8 that he bought around 40 years ago & it had one then (& still has). That doesn’t mean it was fitted when new of course but looks possible. If he has the original invoice it would have it on if supplied with it.

As Chris says, you may well compromise safety if you did a swap. Also, I suspect the price difference between similar condition 4 & 8 cylinder cars will be far less than the cost (& anguish) of putting a V8 in a 4 pot car. The gearbox, propshaft & diff would need changing, as well of course as...
