    AED blanking plug thread

I was going to use the inlet to hook up a vacuum gauge. If I know the thread I could see what might already be available commercially. Its laziness really, I could take the blanking plug out and take it to my local engineering place to check next time I'm going that way. But if someone already...

    SU carburetor model number.

Hi Derrick. Looking at Burlen fuel systems SU catalogue the Cyclops is listed as a 75 rather than a 90. It is the only twin carb model listed as produced from 1950-54 with the 2103cc engine. Twin H4 carb spec numbers are AUC 539. The only other twin carb P4 listed at all are the various 105...

    Late(ish) 3500 Series 1 distributor spec

I've got transistor electronic fitted. Where the points are retained but just working as a switch to fire the transistor, rather than passing the heavy spark current. Obviously the heel still wears on the cam but the points don't pit or pile and are allegedly good for 25,000 miles. 10 years or...

    Late(ish) 3500 Series 1 distributor spec

That will be the next test I guess... For now I'm leaving it set at TDC and just going to enjoy driving it without the dreaded pinking. I can't really say it feels sluggish to drive set at TDC anyway. Next time I'm in the mood for it I'll disconnect the vacuum advance and work through the...

    Late(ish) 3500 Series 1 distributor spec

Thanks fellas. The Distributor Doctor is where I was planning on going. My thoughts now are about the centrifugal advance springs which are listed as different part numbers for the early and late distributors although the actual weights are the same. I guess if reconditioning then the original...

    Late(ish) 3500 Series 1 distributor spec

I have a March 1970 registered 3500 - standard UK spec - 425 engine. The distributor body is stamped 41278 and date stamped 37 69. It has the earlier vacuum advance with the pipe connection running straight out the end of the unit rather than off to the side. So far as expected as per the parts...

    Toledo red teardrops

Here is a pair of Toledo red teardrop headrests in very good condition. They were made about 8 years ago using a pair of donor teardrops in buckskin which were stripped then re-trimmed in original NOS Rover Toledo red vinyl as acquired by a large trimming company in Yorkshire when Rover disposed...

    Guess the gauge game

Hi Jim, The multi-instrument cluster looks likely to be Wolseley 6/110. Can't help with time clocks, they could be more generic fitted to more than one make maybe.....? Smudger.

    Starter relay coil resistance

The SRB111 is a very common fitment to 60s/70s cars and is quoted as the starter relay on the MGB. Also used to control overdrive or horns on several Triumphs - that could be the one - and it is 70 ohms in the diagram.

    Starter relay coil resistance

Well if they all the 6RA family use the same coil unit then I'm guessing the resistance should at least then be the same regardless of whether its a 3, 4 or 5 pin relay or its function on whatever car its fitted to. Like I say mine is reading 35 ohms so if 70-100 ohms is the standard resistance...

    Starter relay coil resistance

The modern replacement works, the original presumably doesn't. If it is something that is fixable then I can keep the old relay as a spare or help someone else out with it if their's fails. If it is beyond repair then so be it but I'd just like to know why.....

    Starter relay coil resistance

I had a feeling that they wouldn't be. Ideally I'd measure the resistance on one on a car where it is working correctly unless Colin can confirm the info on Google is definitely P6 specific? No matter, the modern relay is doing the job anyway but it's this isolation, it's now got me just poking...

    Starter relay coil resistance

Yes it is a 6RA although I'm never confident about assuming that similar-looking components fitted to different makes and models have the same spec. It can be all too easy to get caught out by thinking internals are the same from one make to another when they often aren't. It looks like a lot of...

    Starter relay coil resistance

Ok cheers, I must have missed that one then, mine is reading only 35 ohms across the coil terminals so there is the problem.

The relay itself that is attached to the driver's side inner wing near to the brake fluid resevoir.

    Starter relay coil resistance

Hi Colin, Thanks for that - is that resistance definitely specific to our relays? On Google I've found resistances ranging from 320 ohms to 900 ohms quoted for automotive relays depending on make and application. I couldn't find anything specific for the P6 starter relay although as a standard...

    Starter relay coil resistance

Does anybody know for sure what the starter relay coil resistance should be on a Series 1 3500? Mine has been replaced at some point by a previous owner with a modern relay but the original relay was left in place. I have removed it and had a look inside where all looks clean and sound but if a...

MOT exemption - what if your car fails its voluntary MOT test?

Has anyone yet had any personal experience, or know for sure either way, that if your MOT-exempt classic fails its MOT can it still be driven on the road - i.e. because it is MOT-exempt anyway and the test was voluntary? Or does MOT failure on an exempt vehicle mean that the vehicle can no...

    What have we here?

Since updating Series 1's into Series 2's was a reasonably common pastime in the late 70s and early 80s as these cars passed on to their 3rd and 4th owners, it is possible that it has spent more of its life like this than in its original form, if it is indeed a 1968 car as advertised. If it is a...

    What have we here?

Yes definitely, and the chassis number which should be decisive. The usual giveaway with Series 1 replicas created from Series 2's is the dash and switches. And the reg. no. unless its a J plate which is the only crossover suffix. I don't think I've ever seen Series 1 switches on a Series 2 to 1...
