    Flickering Brake Light

Just gently “tease” the metal cover off (thinks it’s only crimped on). The cork might be in tact but fully saturated. I was surprised when I compared the weight of my the old cork to a fresh one

    Exhaust

I'm want to buy a complete stainless replacement. Has anyone got any recommendations, I know Wins and Wadhams do them but wondered if anyone has experience of any of these and how they fit. I'm hoping they are all a very good simple straight forward replacement fit but have experienced pattern...

    Flickering Brake Light

Thob, I changed my cork for one I bought from a home brew shop, it was really surprising how much heavier the old saturated one was and was obvioulsy too heavy to float and give a true reading. I've not got any pictures and I am no way a mechanic but it was very simple to do if you follow what...

    Faulty alternator or battery???

Update. Although the battery was always showing about 14v on the multimeter, I have just got a replacement battery and think it's sorted. Starts every time and even if I leave alll the lights on without it running for 5 mins still starts straight away. So looks like the battery was the problem...

    Exhaust

I've got a bit of a blow from the exhaust on my '68 V8 P6b where it meets the manifold (see pic). It looks like something is missing, is there a bit of gasket missing or is it just on the join and something i can fill with exhaust paste? The middle box has also developed a hole so am thinking...

    Faulty alternator or battery???

Just got it started again after a day of trickle charge and then put all the lights on including main beam and was getting 14v at the battery at 15oo rpm. Would this suggest that the alternator would appear to be working ok. I'll see if I can get another battery tomorrow and see what happens.

    Faulty alternator or battery???

I've been doing a few checks over the last couple of days. All the connections seem ok with no obvious looseness or corrosion. The battery always seems to have about 13.5v to 14v on multimeter but only seems to start the car if it's been left on trickle charge over night? I saw a suggested test...

    Faulty alternator or battery???

I'm sure the went straight on to the battery terminals?

    Faulty alternator or battery???

Will do a few more investigations, I did think it was strange to see 14v to 14.5v without the engine running or charger connected? I wonder if the battery is showing that voltage but just hasn't got enough current?

    Faulty alternator or battery???

I don't use my 68' P6b that regularly and have it attached to a trickle charger. We went for a 70 mile drive on Friday and I went to move the car after being parked for about 20 minutes and the battery was completely dead? We had a breakdown company jump start us on the Sunday and drove straight...

P6 Services In The Essex/Suffolk Area?

Hi, I normally do the easy general servicing on my '68 P6b but think it would benefit from a bit of a tune up (Carbs set up and balanced and another couple of bits looked at possibly even fitting an electronic ignition) I'm looking for someone who might be able to do this work for me in the...

    Electronic Ignition (worth converting)

Thanks, I take it that if I do convert over and fit a new coil I'd need to wire this in the same as it is now?

    Electronic Ignition (worth converting)

Did some testing last night and have 13.9v into one side of the ballast resistor and 7.9v from the other side and the coil tests 3 ohms across the terminals. The coil says 12v but thought it should be 6v? In the pic I have a wire from the dissy going to the negative side of the coil and a wire...

    Electronic Ignition (worth converting)

So it has no affect on anything else just purely for the coil voltage/current?
  17. eadmr04

    Electronic Ignition (worth converting)

Is the sole purpose of the ballast resistor to reduce the current to the coil and nothing else? By removing it, it would have no affect on anything else?

    Electronic Ignition (worth converting)

Is the ballast the picture I included earlier in the post, sort of ceramic block with a coil of copper inside situated just under the coil? Would I just take the leads off either end and connect together bypassing the ballast or isolate and insulate both ends and leave disconnected?

    Electronic Ignition (worth converting)

Just spoke to the supplier and they said that the ballast must be bypassed, does this mean I have to disconnect the ballast or leave as it but just supply a 12v direct feed to the new coil?

Ah, then that would definitely be the way to do it:)

Basic timing questions from a complete novice.

Did try that quattro but kept having to stop to take the socket out as the fan passed and proved quite timely, seemed a bit quicker the other way. Suppose it's wjhat you get used to:)

Basic timing questions from a complete novice.

Managed to adjust my tickover and get it siting at about 700rpm. Got my timing pointer pointing precisely at TDC now and have adjusted to 4 degrees BTDC with a strobe. Going to see how it runs but so far so good. Thanks for all the advice and help. I found turning the crank pulley really...
