and inner setion due to rot

and replaced with good metal

inner wing rail was very tender under the rubber so was cut out and new section made to fit

repairs to front of the inner wing (my sons first attempt at welding)

front floor under pedals repaired

as was the rear floor (to be finished welding)

i've tried to keep the shape of the floor as much as possible to original

and finally the inner inner sill/base unit and new front jacking point

hopefully the weather will be good and i can get the inner sill and finish off the few bits of new floor to old floor then it will be onto the rear corner

Great progress there . Very impressive !
I bet lying on your back and having to weld upwards must have involved a few adjectives .

I name this car Lazarus :)

Just curious, there's clearly a lot of skill and experience on display here, I know people who've gone a whole career and not been turning out work of this quality, what's your car restoration history? Do you do this/still do this for a living?

Great pictures too.

Hi Peter, thanks for the compliment, this will be the third car i have restored first was a Manta GTE coupe in the 90's then in early 00's i restored a morris minor from a box of bits and now the Rover,
i have been working on cars since the early 80's from the age of 14 now 45,
my welding was all self taught, i just enjoy bring back cars from the brink of death,
i would love to do this for a living

i actually prefer welding on my back to standing up i find i am better balanced for welding,

Well I was taught basic MIG welding by a friend in the business and comparing my results that's why so impressed (and secondly why I'm working in IT); it's just not something everyone can do. About the only thing I'm reasonable at is paint spraying.

Perhaps as a consequence of working in the virtual world I'm all the more fascinated by people who can actually "do". I could literally watch a skilled cabinet maker work all day there was an earlier thread with a guy using old fashioned panel beating skills on a wing. This for someone like me is bordering on witchcraft.

Like most people my age or older, I've had cars welded in the past by carious garages and it's nowhere near the quality you've achieved, I guess partly it's skill but also the investment in time to get the best results. It's just not viable to bill customers for a couple days labour hence you tend to get a plate slapped across a hole rather than a proper reconstruction.

Which takes me to my car. Swiss MFK is very strict. Any hole and its a fail, none of this however many inches from a suspension mount business. Hence the small holes (2cm) in the usual place under the rear seat has a huge plate over it and I'm hoping to get this redone properly over the next year. So it's good for me to see the pictures and the work you are doing to get a feel for what's involved. I actually feel far more confident about my car and it's future prospects but I will probably take it to Mr. Dunning when I'm next in the UK for a proper look over. Apart from the lack of skills with P6s (I think the garage guy was going to burst into tears when I collected the car after having the rear brakes overhauled), Swiss labour rates will make your eyes water...

Anyway, that particular estourer is very fortunate survivor, given the rarity it's good news it fell into your hands. I'm certain in other circumstances it would most likely have ended up as parts on ebay.

Wauw when I see this you have to be very in love with that car to do this extensive welding.

Yehh, these people still excists, respect for what it turns out, you are a real artist of art.

Only where is al the flesh you need?

nice work, you have to love sustainability also ( do I write it properly).

regards

hi all back again, been a busy few weeks so not had time to update but here i am.

offside front suspension checked over removed the years of rust and crud then treated to two coats of chassis black.

this was two days into making the rear inner wing good again

and progress made

a close up of the plates put in to repair and strengthen the inner wing.

new inner D-post strengthening panel from JRW.

sill end all boxed in ready for the cover plate

and all plated in and seam sealed

this is what i managed to make up for the inner wing to be as you saw in previous photos i did not have a lot to work with, and once i had cut out all the smaller pieces of rust there was even less, this was followed by copious ammount of seam sealer, this rover is not going to rust for masny years to come

D-post to inner wing repair i think getting this right took longer than putting the D-post on

new D-post from JRW had the same problem on this side as the other side of having to cut the bottom four inches off and welding them on in two parts and adding a half inch sliver of metal to join the two together after a bit of adjustment the door shuts with just a little click.

new rear step welded in but not cleaned up yet

rear chassis was frilly so the rust was cut out and small plates welded in, the staibaliser mount you see in the picture was held in with luck, when i wire brushed the underseal away i found the chassis box section all around was just body filler, i was amazed it had held on.

every welded joind has been seam sealed to prevent the ingress of water i will then coat with a couple of coats of stonechip,
then everything well be ging a couple of coats of underseal schutz, then finally the whole underside inside the chassis and the sills will be treated to 10 litres of black waxoil, so i can be sure of a few years of not having to weld her up .

to sum up it is really looking like the end of the welding marathon, new battery tray was welded in today and i have started tidying up the inside wheel arch and window frame, i will add final welding pictures asap

Some great work going on. Just shows what can be done when someone puts there mind to it.
Theres hope for all them poor rusty p6 s out there.
Good work
Marcus

finally finished off the structual welding

this was the last area that needed work but like the other side seemed to take the longest to do.

i have in the last two weeks started on the body panels which all need metal letting in sonewhere or other
it has been fun cutting out the rot and letting in new metal so as not to be able to see the join, a skim of filler does help but only a skim.
the drivers side rear door bottom two inches was all filler front to back about 4-5 mm thick, this was all removed and new home made sections let in,
once the exterior or the doors were done i then stripped the doors down to the bare shell and blasted the inside of the doors to remove rust and crud, all bare metal surfaces were then given a coat of etch primer then two coats of hi-build primer inside and out, rubbing down between coats then finally two coats of standard primer angain flatted back ready for the top coats hopefully next week.

will post up more pics when i start the colour coats

Really really, I have a lot respect for what you are been through, this is sure not for beginners and it let see how much love
here is put in.

Mucho respect, yes this is now sustainable economics.

I hope you have much fun with this car who was almost total eaten by rust and is be saved.
