2200tc electronic ignition

Hi all,

I'm wanting to use my 2200tc daily and would likely upgrade to eletronic ignition.

The trouble is there seems to be so many options! I've done a forum search but was wanting to see if anybody had any up to date views?

There seems to be simonsbbc kits, powerspark, 123, lumenition and others.
My other queary to to whether it is worth building the basic ignition kits or whole hog and get a full electronic distributor? What's the main difference, the dizzy just comes ready fitted with the leccy ignition?

Thanks
Graham

First off, if an original Lucas distributor is in good condition I'd not even consider replacing it with an aftermarket jobby.
Check the shaft for play, and that the mechanical advance mechanism operates without sticking. The vacuum diaphragms do perish with age, but Martin at Distributor Doctor can sort that for you. I'd definitely move away from points though.

Some people swear by Lumenition, some by Hall Effect systems. They're all proven, so you pays your money, etc, etc.

I'm in the later category, and have Pertronix Ignitor on all my cars. One of the reasons I like it is that everything fits inside the distributor cap.

Thanks vaultsman. Been having a search around. What seems to be the difference between systems such as lumenition that tends to have exterior power boxes and products like accuspark where it's all contained within the dizzy? Do people tend to think the more expensive systems are worth it over the cheaper ones? Some seem to need alternative coils as well?

There is also Lumenition Magnetronic, that is having everything contained within the standard distributor. I am using it since i first got my 2000 TC, almost 12 years now. Most of this period was hard everyday use that allowed me to accumulate more than 110K miles. I have never had a problem, and it is even compatible with my RVI rev counter.

So after digging around I'm edging towards a Powerspark unit through SimonsBBC, simply through ease and practicality. Getting a Pertronix from the USA seems a faff and Lumenition is more costly.

It seems most Powerspark kits require or some come with a 12v coil.
I believe the system on my 2200TC is a ballasted system if the old Lucas sticker on my current coil is anything to go by.

So to fit a 12v coil and leccy dizzy, I simply replace the old coil with new 12v item, find the ballast power wire that runs from the ignition barrel to the coil, disconnect and run a new wire (what amp?) from the same posts from ignition to coil. Then hook up red and black from new dizzy to the coil as per instructions?

Thanks
Graham

Getting a Pertronix from the USA seems a faff
A few years since I bought two, but both times I ordered on a USA based website then recieved an email saying they were being sent from their UK warehouse. They duly arrived in good time with no customs hassle. So no faff.

The basic one for Lucas 25d4 distributor. Think they call it ignitor 1 if my memory serves me well.
