3.9

Hi all. I've been offered a decent 3.9 at a good price. Just wondering if besides swapping all the ancillaries sump timing cover and swapping the needles there is any other engineering required to fit it?

If not I'm very tempted to pay the money....

Thanks

Rich

Not really. If you have the opportunity to see it running I would sniff the coolant with a tester to see if the cooling system is all OK.

Hi Rich,

Depending upon what year the 3.9 is, you may need a spacer for the crankshaft pulley. You'll need to drill a hole at the back of the block to accommodate the 't' piece for the engine breather filter.

Be very mindful of the fact that the 3.9 litre engines suffer from the slipped liner issue, only slightly better than the 4.0 litre engines.

I thought the hole was there but it had a coreplug fitted which needed to be knocked out, but I stand to be corrected on that.

I have heard the 3.9 and upwards engines are prone to problems with their liners. I know one engine rebuilder told me that none of them can stand being overheated or tolerate it as well as the 3.5. .

Broadly speaking this is true but a good recon will likely have "top hat" liners anyway removing any issues.

Having the cross-bolted block is nice for off road work and sports applications like a TVR but for the type of driving a P6 saloon does I'm not sure it's that much of a plus.
