Hi,

Ive got a question for the folks who've done a 4.6 conversion.
Im part way through and have found the oil pick up strainer on the GEMS 4.6 is mounted to the timing cover - on the 3.5 it was in the middle of the block. The 4.6 still has the older mounting so I can bolt the oil pick up strainer from the P6 to it, but what do I need to make sure it works?

Thanks in advance

Matt

Hi Matt,

Yes you do. Make sure you use a gasket between the pick up and the block. You'll be running either a P6B or SD1 timing cover I presume. You'll be able to test that all is well when you either start the engine, having packed around the oil pump gears with Vaseline, or use a drill with the correct fitting, in place of the distributor.

Hi Ron,

Im using an SD1 timing cover that had been on my P6 already, trail fitted and looking good there. Just to be sure, so as long as I use a gasket and prime the oil pump, the pick up should work just by bolting it up to in the old position under the block? Sorry for the paranoia, really want to be sure!

Thanks,

Matt

My 4.6 has the oil pick in that position. The oil galleries within the block will direct the oil to the timing cover in exactly the same way as with the P6B engine. You have nothing to fear of it not working Matt. :)

You need the gasket to form a proper seal between the pick up pipe and the block. You can think of it like this, if Rover had not intended for oil to be picked up from that location, they would have deleted the gallery, but they didn't. ;)
When they designed the later timing cover, the oil pump in which is driven off the crankshaft, a different oil pick up was required, but running the Sd1 timing cover and the earlier block mounted oil pick up is not an issue!

Thats what I assumed, but you know what assumed is the mother or all...

Id spent ages looking over both blocks to compare and couldn't see any differences but wanted to be sure, having read up loads about the conversion (including yours!) Id not come across, or at least remembered, this until I couldn't figure out why the timing cover wouldnt come free!

Thanks for the help, Ill crack on today now!
