4speed problem with 2nd gear

Hi,

I'm looking for some advice regarding my 4speed. The problem I have is that the 2nd gear jumps out while driving down a hill without any load (which is in particular a problem because I live in Stuttgart, Germany which is quite hilly) Im now afraid to take the transmission out, dismantlle it and not be able to find the correct spare parts.

Thanks
Peter

Its possible it is just wear, unless the selector has moved on the shaft and is not allowing correct engagement of the coupling sleeve. There is very precise instructions in the workshop manual for setting the positions of the selector forks. The detent spring may have weakened and replacing it would help

Mine does the same thing sometimes as well. Have you changed your engine mounts recently? Mine started to do that after renewing the engine mounts (with volkswagen mounts). I think I need to do an adjustment on a stop on the shift linkage. It seems to be less of a problem now that they new mounts have compressed in a bit.

Hello Peter

I had this with the back gear. I changed the bearings from the layshaft and one from the mainshaft, and it was gone.
Exept one bearing all the others you can get in a normal bearing shop (ich spreche Deutsch)

Dear all,

during the weekend I finaly removed the transmision from the car and dismantled it. Unfortunately I found (besides from a broken synchro ring) wear on 6 teeth of the layshaft (see picture).

Does anyone have a spare part or knows where to get one.

Thanks in advance.

One forum member on here got a new laygear from Wins about a year or so ago, that was the first one I've seen surface for about 35 years. Used ones are generally as bad as the one you have already, but if you were to find one out of a used box you could at least inspect it before you purchase. I've sold good used ones in the past, but don't have any now.
If you do rebuild it, don't buy a new synchro ring, they're sh*t, find a good used one instead. The last set of new ones I used had one fail within about 5 miles.

(Un)fortunately I have a 3500. Meanwhile I also contacted Jon Wadham and wins but noone has a replacement part. So I will probably keep mine and cross fingers that it lasts for a while.

@harveyp6, thanks for the remark regarding the synchro ring. I found a good used one so that I dont have to deal with the quality of the reproduction.
