5 speed install and off to the painters !

So a couple of weekends ago I was able to get access to the works facilities over a long weekend as the cars were at Ally Pally for a show. I decided to carry out the 5 speed conversion I had planned.

Unfortunately I did not have all the pieces of the jigsaw ready, The flywheel needed to go away to be faced and lightened and I did not have a friction plate.

I rushed the flywheel into Scholar Engines on Thursday afternoon with the hope of collecting it Saturday lunchtime and also ordered a friction plate on next day delivery.

I got the engine and slushbox pulled on the Friday and mounted the 5 speed to the motor and shoved it back in the hole to allow the fabricating of the new rear gearbox mount.

This I did on Saturday and collected the flywheel. On Sunday the engine and box were out again and the flywheel and clutch fitted and the new pedal box and clutch master cyl went in.

Then the lot was re installed and hooked up. The existing propshaft bolted right up and the gearstick came right out the existing auto shifter hole and just needs a rubber gaiter.

Of course this is the condensed version leaving out the adapting of the clutch pushrod to work in harmony with the 4 speed manual cylinders I had and the bleeding etc and the general jiggery pokery of getting bits to fit and work.

But the car does now drive :)

I shall be nervously pacing up and down awaiting the outcome.

Moi, jealous? Er, yeah! Not 'alf!! Wicked wheelz sir!
I really am going to have to pull my finger out of posterior and fit the 5-speed box I've had sat gathering dust in my lock-up for three years come the end of January 2017! Wide arches are going to have to wait until I find the proverbial pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Couldn't afford wider wheels'n'tyres to fill 'em up anyway, so for now I'll just keep looking at your car and dreamin'.
I grew up just behind Ally Pally. I remember seeing the old Street Machine magazine P5B down at the bottom of the park where the horse racing track used to be. The guys from the mag were doing enthusiastic burnouts, as was the owner of a spangly metalflaked 'Vette called Dream Machine or something. And there was a mean hi-rise Gasser style yellow Consul (?) with a tube front axle (?) smokin' it's big rear tyres there too. All after the Custom Car show was over, but before the exhibitors all dispersed. Guess that's where and when I got the V8 bug.

Ähem, same with my LT77 box. I´ve heard from speed-dating, but speed-gearboxing ?
By the way, can I change gears on the LT77 as done in this video ?? (sit back, relax and when video is at 5.55, look...).
Do I need a cigar ?

Henry Highrise? Lives around here somewhere, yes he is still about. I might have some piccies somewhere.

Glad you like the wheels :) I think I'll put the Minilites out for the trash and keep the steels.
Speed gearboxing was more by necessity than desire, I had a window - four long days, but worth it............ I hope

If you're tossing out the Minilites, I'll happily take your refuse away! ;)
Yeah, Henry Hirise, that was it. Stonking great supercharged big block IIRC, left huge rubber stripes in it's wake. Nuts. Glad to hear it still exists. Wonder what happened to the blue P5B? Probably rusted away. Sorry to go so far off topic. As I am often wont to do.

I can't remember what you're doing colourwise? Red or Blue replica? Or something different?

That is the worst part about painting. If you mess up the prep it can look really pants, but the prep is such hard work that lots of guys will short cut it.

I have never owned a blue car, so blue it is.
I had a card done in French Racing blue but am not happy with it as it came out too grey. The hunt is on for a nice blue.

I reckon mk1 scooby blue metallic would look good..... - Looking on google i see the bug eyes have a good shade of blue too.

I don't want a metallic sorry. I think a solid colour will be more old school, the roof is Old English White and the card for that came out well. I have found a PPG chart for blues and have asked the guys to do some cards from a group of blues that look possibles.
I saw a car in the summer that was the perfect colour and asked the owner for the code - the French Racing Blue, but the result was not good. I have seen pictures on the web of the same car and the colour looks nothing like it on my monitor. I am trying to track down the owner as he lives not far from me to ask if I can spectrograph the car.

no need to be sorry it's your car :D What was the blue that the aws engineering was painted in?

Last time I spoke with Ian Giles the owner he told me it was Leyland Blue, I have looked at all the period chips and cannot find any colour that either has that name or is that colour. I am looking at Leyland tractor codes. The Renault Gordini I saw in the summer was the perfect blue. I gotta find that car !
