Finally had some time this morning. Took Beryl out for a good drive before it got too hot, it was already 80°f when I did. Finally have the carbs nicely balanced both for mixture and air. I’ve switched to 0W40 oil in the dashpots and that’s helped throttle response and acceleration over the original spec 20 weight. It was lovely just jumping in the car, starting her and enjoying the drive.

Silly added bonus: I’d re-shimmed the drivers door yesterday, it shuts like a bank vault now. Funny how those little things make a difference.

How was your weekend?

How was your weekend?

My weekend was had two halfs ;):
Saturday I worked on a mates 1968 Lancia Fulvia engine, a compact narrow angle all alloy V4 with two overhead cams; but boy what a difference from the Rover V8 engine. The 1.3 liter engine is tiny, (very short) allowing it to be located in front of a front wheel drive transalxe. Boy it turns heads more than the Rover.

Spent Sunday cutting hedges. With an electric trimmer; they say electric is the future. So that means according to 'them' I'm living the dream when I'm cutting hedges. But I know I was living my dream on Saturday, I took the V8 Rover for a spin before the Lancia arrived.

I know the Lancia V4 well! I get to occasionally play with a Fulvia Berlina of a friends. It’s a great engine, very rev happy. In our case fed by twin Dellorto carbs. As a bit of trivia: Saab seriously considered the Lancia V4 over the Ford V4 they ended up using. A shame because I think the Lancia engine is much more Saab like.

So far, I am impressed by the design of the wee engine. The car had been unused for nearly 15 years. We've recommissioned the car over last 2 years, only just got its MOT, so only now is it getting some mileage. I think the head gasket has gone; blowing continually frothy coolant out. This seems to depress the owner, conversely I'm excited to see inside the engine. Here's the owners blog 1968 Lancia Fulvia Rallye 1.3 Restoration

I’ll have to check his blog out. They’re very smooth engines when setup well. Takes a bit of getting used to the 4,500rpm at 70mph at first, but it seems pretty happy there.

I have always liked them, this one was rather special and being Wizzo's would be a great example, he loved things to be right. It was literally as clean underneath as it was on top. Ah well, one can dream.
