Accelerator bracket

BOP seems to have a non-standard (ie: bodged) spring retaining bracket on its n/s rocker cover:

It looks like nothing other than a piece of bent scrap & I'm sure it doesn't help the smooth operation of the accelerator.

Would someone please take a picture of their own? I know several of you have advertised cars being broken in the past; if you have an original part, I'd be interested in buying it from you.

Looking at the factory manuals & parts books, I can't find this anywhere!

I suspect that because there's a hole n the lever, someone has thought a spring was missing when in fact there probably isn't. Whether the other return springs in the system had been broken & they'd tried to 'repair' it with another spring here, we'll never know.

Does anyone's V8 have the spring shown above?

not seen that but will have a look under a rovers bonnet next chance I get as my car has always had the 'bodge ' spring to rocker cover and clearly not factory fitting!

To keep motorsport scrutineers happy an additional throotle return spring is required on a standard V8 setup. In my mind there are already the required number of return springs for the MSA, but to keep them happy the most simple way to attached an extra return spring is as per your photo. So maybe and who knows but maybe the car has been 'Raced or Rallied'. As long as a weak spring is used, it should do no harm.
non-standard (ie: bodged)
'Non-standard' can be a Hack (good) or a Bodge (bad), just depends what your doing and why. To me that looks like a Hack.

Gav.

Interesting stuff!

I thought it was a bodged replacement of an existing part. Knowing the history of the car, I can't imagine it's ever been raced or rallied, but it had certainly been "bodged" in many areas

I've disconnected this spring & it has transformed the driving of the car!

The standard throttle return makes for much smoother running when 'lifting off' the accelerator as it avoids a sudden drop in revs.

I had changed this spring for a weaker one many years ago, but could never get it 'right'. Wish I'd known it wasn't meant to be there 10 years ago...:(

:hmm: Makes one wonder what other 'improvements' by previous owners remain to be discovered and rectified!
BOP along smoothly into the week ahead!

Hopefully I’ve uncovered most of them!

It really demonstrates that if you get a neglected example it is very difficult to get it back to good form. Far better the old adage “buy the best you can afford”.

However, I was given BOP so I mustn’t be too judgemental.
