After 20 years a P6 again finally a V8 automatic. With work that is.....

Memory is not what it used to be for me either, but i often find that the increased judgment ability compensates nicely.

Yesterday I mounted the engine and box:

Still to do:

add oil to the autobox
Connect all the electrics
fit exhaust
engine cooler and add coolant
Fit bonnet
etc etc

finally the box installed and the rover is running again. Some fiddling with the kickdowncable was necessairy but she runs good now! I also changed the tatty interior for a second hand series 1 interior!
The update is late because we moved to our new house with a lot of work!!

I have a question though how do I know the kickdowncable is not too loose so that the box is slipping? I want to avoid that because the box will wear out and will overheat quickly.....

some pictures now:

i have been able to purchase 4 magnum 500 wheels with suitable hubs! The puzzled me but the seem to be Rover hubs altered by american dealers to fit the magnum500 wheel. The studs are thicker, smaller and in a 4,5"pattern.

Not been on here for a while (years) but just read your whole post. Great work, but one thing I noticed. Your SD1 motor should have electronic ignition, no points and no ballast resistor. I run fuel injection and an SD1 front cover. Gives me electronic ignition and bigger oil pump. Oh and it needs a different coil. Unless someone has changed the drive on the original dizzy. Jim.

Jim thanks for you reply The engine indeed has electronic ignition. It has the Lucas opus 35de8 distributor.

The ballastresistor is removed ( this was a wire from the original P6 setup). Also the coil has been replaced with a Blue Bosch.

all runs pretty well now albeit that the idle speed is a little high.
I have to figure out how the richen the mixture a little bit so I can lower the idle speed. it is now around 900-1000 rpm and with gear engaged it is around 700. but lower it will stall if the engine gets on temperature. than the figures are around a 100 lower

Looks smashing Pepijn! Would love to see this with the Magstars, it's a great look. Amazing combination with the caravan too, just lovely.

Hi Thijs, Yes i really would like to mount the other wheels! They are not magstars though but magnum500. Bach in the day a common wheel for muscle cars l But was not avaiable in the rimsize for Rover P6 so they altered the Hubs to match the wheels! They are very similar to the Rostyles. I have 4 wheels so i have to find a spare wheel before i fit them.

Stud pattern is 5 x 4,75 inch and rim is 14 inch tall

Any ideas for a suitable rim?

I found a suitable wheel! it is a 14 inch, 5 stud 120 mm pattern rim 5,5 J wide and it is from a Hyundai H200 van! I am happy I found a suitable rim for this size! This is for the modified hubs made to fit the magnum 500 wheels in the united states in the erarly years.

I would have to disagree with your man. BW65/66 have 2 flexible bands, BW35 in the case of Rover have solid bands front and rear except for the 303 which has a flexible front, but if you have a self adjusting front servo you can fit a flexible band to the front if you want to.

Harveyp6......all those wonderful pictures would make a great screen saver for your computer, a busdrivers holiday
but in pictures. No need to remember the muddle fuddling bits ? ;)

It's too late, because not only can I not post pictures, the bit you quoted I got wrong as well.....

It's the start of a slippery slope.....

Yes finally I found some rostyles. Changing the hubs for fitting the magnum wheels is a lot of work and I didnot have a pair of spare rear driveshafts so I went for the easy way and bought some rostyles.

fitted new tyres which was a pain to get the air in becaus the gaps between the tyre and the rim were big so it dd not start to inflate because of the air leaks. At last it worked and the are fitted now:

Your new wheels look terrific. What tyres did you opt for?
Just scrolled back through your post. That matching caravan is quite splendid. You're winning, sir!

Thanks for the compliments!! Tyres I fitted are Hankook k715 185/80 r14. Not as good as Michelin’s but at 53 euros a piece. I will take my chances..

I decided to get rid of the injection stuff. The engine does not run beautiful and is idling a little high. I want to get the engine to run on lpg so the setup with carbs is easier to get it on LPG than with injection. And it is als a lot cheaper!! I think 1200 euro vs 2500 euro. On lpg inmjection the car is stronger and runs more economical but it is als more prone to failures..... So to keep it simple I want to revert to carbs.......
I managed to get a inlet manifold with hs6 carbs.

I got it cleaned, sandblasted the carbs (with glass beads) and sprayed the manifold in grey:

of course some bits were missing like the choke lever connecting rod. This one is home made.......but works!!

The fuel pipe between the carbs will suffer from vapor lock if you leave it low like that, it is too close to the manifold. If you loosen the unions you can swivel it up to give a decent air gap. They have cleaned up very well. Do also check the small water hose connection on the tower is not blocked up.
