Aftermarket steering wheels...

Interesting - that happened to me to - the MB033 boss that I also bought does not fit - it has only 28 splines (I counted them!) - so I am still looking for a boss to fit my Astrali wheel which has the same 6 hole fitting as the Mountney. I may have to bite the bullet and buy a Moto-lita complete with boss for £150!!!
The Moto Lita boss part number is B34 for the P6/P6B

Moto-Lita looks nice. I rescued this from a dumped crashed P6 the day it went to the scrap yard in London back in the 80s. I bet the Tow Truck folk cursed me when they were trying to move the car from the lamppost it was wrapped around. The next weekend I saw the same car in the local scrapyard, I wonder how much they would’ve wanted for the steering wheel. I’ve used it ever since, it’s a nice addition, however they get very hot if you park in the sunshine.

I emailed Motolita and have had good response from them. Currently dicussing a tailor made Cobra wood rim, 15", thick rim, dished model, ro fit straight onto the std boss I found under my wheel. Main issue is the bolt holes (3/8" hole) spigot on the boss on a 2.5" pcd, but there are 3 1/4" holes that the cap spigots on, and while they are on same PCD, they are asymmetric, so the cap will only go on one way.
If they come up with a solution, is anybody else interested - group buy ?

I'm not sure if it will be much help for what you want to do, but I used a billet aluminium adapter spacer and redrilled to suit the Rover splined boss.
It was a generic 6 hole spacer for the Corvette c3 wheel I had sourced and wanted to use.
From memory I just had to file out 3 slots in the wheel centre to get a nice press fit for the badge.

Ah, so now it is clear that the boss plays no part in holding the centre cap, it is held in by the clips locating in the steering wheel centre hole and the pegs on the cap stop it turning.
Seems the new Motolita would need the centre hole reducing to match the old wheel, by use of a pressed in insert maybe, and a new set of 3/8" dia holes drilled to mount the wheel, and another 3 holes to stop the cap turning. You could shave the pegs down on the cap as it is unlikely to turn anyway and do away with the need for peg holes in the wheel.
It will be interesting to hear the price Motolita come up with to do the works for a custom build.

The Motolita man says they start a wheel hub with a 1" hole, so opening to 1.5" is not an issue. I did suggest that if they can do the 3 x 3/8" holes to spigot on the boss I could drill the other 3 holes for the cap easily. Hoping the price is not crazy - ie no more than the price of their boss and its postage to Oz over the std price of the Cobra wheel.

Sadly it came back a bit too dear for my pocket - GBP425+ shipping.....giving it a miss, at least for now. Still looking for something locally, now I know all the vital dimensions.

I installed a Moto Lita wheel on a power steer car today; take out the center lock nut and star washer and knock off the boss ( rubber mallet ) Install the Moto Lita B34 boss after lining up the steering wheel ( rubber mallet ) Tighten the nut with the star washer under it, attach steering wheel to the Boss... Done

New plot. The Motolita Cobra wheel has a centre plate OD very similar to that of the std wheel.
AC Cobra Wood Rim OEM - Moto-Lita
Also it has a 6 bolt fixing almost identical to the P6 - 62mm. The bolt pattern is 30d off from a P6's , so my idea is to drill 3 new holes for the 3 fixing bolts, enlarge 3 of the original holes outwards to locate the centre cap, which will clip into the tabbed locking plate. Tricky issue is that the spigot holes for the cap are not evenly spaced - measure twice, drill once. Since they say wood rims are actually a bit smaller than spec, will probably go for 15".
Anybody see why it wont work?
thanks
