alternator issue

Whilst the car was at the garage they noticed that the alt belt was running at an angle to the fan pulley and suggested I moved the alternator to the other side of the mount. apon trying that it made it run at an angle the other way. I am fairly sure the alternator is wrong as there is a locating dowel on one of the legs and doesn't fit the hole.

Whilst I can get a correct alternator from wins I will have to save my pennies for it. he did point out that the pulley might be the wrong size as well. if this is the case will it do damage. obviously the larger or smaller the pulley the slower or faster it will turn hence produces less or more voltage.

Does anyone know what the correct pulley diameter should be??

many thanks
