And now for something completely different

When you finish it will be a bit like the old broom 6 new heads and 4 new handles :D

Yep lol. All
I’m concerned with is making it better looking, ie real, and more functional. Some of it remains “original”. The four cylinder Landrover engine for example, much to my disappointment, it really needs a choppy V8..
Speaking of the engine, today we finished these beauties, what a treat for a tired old landy motor in its twilight years

Nah I think we all agree that the polished stainless contrasting with the rust just looks so good. It’s gonna be loud, but probably not a very nice loud lol.
We may try fitting a spark plug to ignite the fumes but not sure how impressive they’d be..

Still lots going on with this, but we’re nearly at the end of the fabrication work.
More stainless exhaust work completed yesterday, this intermediate pipe joins the 4 way exit to the Landrover mild steel downpipe.
It’s a shame that the mandrel bends that were sourced were poor quality, squashed out of round and actually 1mm undersize. Otherwise this would look perfect, not that it needs to obviously!

Most of the sheeting has now been completed, along with the installation of the second ram, mounted horizontally inside the crane structure.
This came from a wheelchair lift of some sort and is telescoping with around 3m travel.

I haven’t got many photos of that install as it was testing our patience a little.

Got a head start on some of the mechanical work too

Extra long travel Heavy duty rear shocks fitted, no split pin in the lower yet!

Pedal box cylinders fitted and clutch line and throttle cable connected.
I’ll be making up brake lines this week

Jim, I saw this vehicle on a weird corner of the automotive interwobbles I occasionally frequent. I've not seen the movie this creation is from, but I'm pretty sure it ought to be your next project!

You have been done, mandrel bends are not squashed.
They are either compression bends or his equipment/operator is faulty.

Yes exactly, that’s the whole point of mandrel bending.
Luckily I didn’t buy them personally and the project doesn’t require perfect seamless exhaust. But it’s made setup and welding them a lot trickier than necessary.
Selling then as mandrel bends is cheeky though . They had tooling marks in the outside too which I presumed were rotary drawn. I’d get better bends in my homemade hydraulic Hilmor! Might start calling that the Triple H lol

Haha, wow nice!
Isn’t that the superhero comedy with Ben Stiller etc?
I’ll let the owner of this know, you never know!

Lots more done today and the “end” is in sight.

Stainless exhaust now completed, splicing into the mild steel factory land rover downpipe

Steering has been redone, stronger mounting with the drop arm now dropping ;)
I’ve also fitted the master cylinder reservoirs here

All the sheeting is now done, including waterproofing all the batteries, hydraulics and electrics. Here’s the crane sheeted. It’s now also has a steel front support roller and two nylon castor rollers diagonally bearing down from the top at the rear, not photographed, to help keep everything square and true when extending the horizontal

And here’s a nice evening sun shot of the nearly completed cam driven rocker arm.
It is belt driven from the axle shaft that the side wheel turns on.
Two sliding support rod ‘pistons’ at either end of the rocker arm.

Here’s one of the reasons we went for a new aluminium tank and fuel line.
That sediment stuck to a magnet gloriously

Mwa Ha Ha Haaa!!!! :thumb:
Pretty much exactly this :p
Pleasantly surprised with the sound of the old 4 banger through the open pipes.
There also appears to be sufficient pressure to install some ignitor plugs

I won’t bore with the full details of fault diagnoses/failed starts now, but in short I’ve put on a new carb, coil, engine earth, ignition wiring, push button start, starter solenoid, water pump, radiator and plugs to get it to this point.
