Base unit panel thickness for repairs

As I have retired there can be no more excuse's for leaving Roy under his cover. The first thing I intend tackling is rust in the base unit which doesn't seem to bad.Could someone advise which is the best panel steel for this? Also I have decided to repair the doors by cutting out the rust and backing the area effected with steel held in place by 3M panel bond instead of bogging as had been done.My thinking on this is around avoiding warping in the door panels, and ending up lashing filler on to hide the lumps and bumps.I wouldnt use this method on the base unit tho. Thanks Dave

Are you looking for a challenge or just the best results? It can take days to fix up a door, panels secondhand aren't a problem for the P6, You can usually find something that needs either little or no work. Otherwise the best results are usually obtained by fixing the frame and welding a lower, half skin to the car. Like you say although it's perfectly possible to patch, this will require work to disguise. Using a half skin you take the join up out of the area which is prone to water and rust. It very much depends on you skill and patience.
