Battery terminal spanner size

This has bugged me since I got my car. Had to refit the battery the other day which reminded me about it so here goes....

What is the correct spanner size for removing the battery terminal? It looks about 1/2" but neither it or a 13mm fit. 12mm is too small and although I can tighten it with a 14mm it's a slack fit.

When I saw this back in September, I went out into the garage and went through my box of old stuff. I did find a rusty and rather crusted 1/4 Whitworth. After spending ten minutes on the bench grinder wire brush, I finally I have a spanner that fits :) Cheers Harvey

Hi, You used to be able to get 'battery spanners' which were a single ended 1/4" Whit open with the shaft encase in a rubber solution, this was to avoid firework displays if you dropped it across open links of the battery. I still have a couple in the 'box but are little used now batteries are sealed cases.
