Boot rack or roof rack

Hi all, I’m planning a long road trip to Germany in April and will no doubt have a large about of stuff.

What are people’s opinions on boot racks vs roof racks. I’ve come across some nice wooden slated boot mounted ‘racks’ and thought they looked quite nice (I don’t have the touring kit). Has anyone used them? Is the general consensus that a roof rack is better?

Along the same lines as this...

Aluminium Boot Rack With Wood Slats & Fittings - RX1330

I put a roof rack on my Rover 2200 every time we offed on holiday back in the 1980s , but try this will Thule Roof Racks - Britpart - VPLAR0001BPNORAIL | Rimmer Bros I dont like the look of those sucker feet on the boot rack you were interested in, would they hold at 70 mph? :D
I have just clicked on the link and it brings up bars suitable for a Discovery 3. That vehicle has roof rails that the bars fit and clamp into. Cannot see how it would attach to a P6
The suckers just spread the load on the boot fitting, they don't hold it on , that is done by the side clamps to the edge of the boot.
The Rover optional roof rack fits & clamps to the gutter , I believe it had wooden slats.

I would love the original Rover roof rack but they're like hens teeth to find and when you do, seem to fetch serious money. The boot rack seemed like a way of getting something roughly period correct that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

I have one of the original racks, it's very nice. And yes, they both have wood slats & clamp to the roof gutters.

Even with nothing in it, it slows the car down (top speed down close to 10 mph) and creates a lot of wind noise. But I suppose that's true for any rack, even the Thule streamlined ones add to the noise.

If you have an eye for aesthetics then the original rack should be mounted the opposite way round to the illustration. It looks clumsy with the angled end of the sidebars at the front.
Most people seem to follow the illustration though, l presume just because the illustration shows it that way. I bought & fitted mine before l ever saw the brochure & it never occurred to me to fit it other than angles at the back to follow the roofline.

Does any one have any photos of the original roof racks fitted to the car?

yeah but it shows exactly how the roof rack attaches to the P6 roof gutters and I used one back in the 1980s that was a bit bigger and basically made up of black hollow tubes, that slotted into metal corner fasteners, I chucked suitcases on top of it without a seconds thought, a couple of bungee straps, job done down to Hayling Island for a week

correct, what a band! just a shame that the primitive video cassette couldnt record their cacophany in better sound

Portsmouth and luckily its still there
