Borg Warner 37

I,m thinking of buying a car fitted with a BW37 which I believe is an uprated BW35 but there is a problem with the box in that it doesn,t change into top gear.Is this a common problem and could it be an easy fix?

AFAIK it is, and its a longtitudinal FWD box fitted to SAAB. It was a later version of the 35TB.

If it does eventually select TOP, but only at high speed and after lifting off the throttle then it's most likely the kickdown cable adjustment, but that will also give a late 1-2 shift as well. If you never get TOP no matter what you do then the most common fault is failure of the rear clutch, but when that happens you lose REVERSE as well, so if you still have REVERSE then it isn't the clutch, and if that's the case then it could be the 2-3 shift valve sticking, but that's a rarity.
The only curved ball to throw in there is that governor faults can mimic cable adjustment faults. Governors can stick after the box has been unused.

Many thanks for that Harvey, the car in question is a Rambler Rebel SST and I went to look at it last night but I could not see any sort of cable from the carb to the gearbox so would the gearbox work if the cable is missing?

I'm not sure of the set up on the Rambler. Some later boxes (in Australia IIRC) did away with the cable replacing it with a vacuum modulator. With those if you have a vaccuum leak it will affect the shifts. If it should have a cable but it's not connected then it will change up very early unless someone has jammed the valve that the cable connects to raise the pressures.

Pics of the box might help me a bit if they show the bits I'd be looking for, like cables and modulators.

Hiya Harvey,
Yes box has a vacuum modulator, modulator holds 20" of vacuum, plenty of vacuum from engine oil level good selector mechanism adjusted correcty but still doesn,t change into top.Can a BW35 be substituted?

It sounds like you have everything you need, so if you're not losing fluid because the modulator has failed (normally accompanied by lots of blue smoke from the exhaust), and you can still get REVERSE, then it's possible the 2-3 shift valve is stuck, but sticky valves are a rarity, or a loss of governor pressure.

Can a BW35 be substituted?

Possibly, but not knowing the box, I couldn't answer with any degree of certainty.
