Borg Warner 65 problems

Is it possible for a B/W 65 to pack up over night without signs of any symptoms.?? I have a 1975 V8 auto. I gave the car to a garage to complete the restoration. After completion he said he drove the car to another garage to get a rolling road tune up. I was told the tune up was a success, was told the BHP was actually increased. The garage collected car from the tune up and said he was very impressed when he was driving it back. I went to collect the car a few days later and took it for a test drive. After couple of minutes the gearbox started slipping and was not engaging any secondary gears. It got a lot worse by the time I got back to the garage. I noticed when he checked the transmission level that it was dry. he did say that he put a few litres in earlier ?. The garage is now saying that the gearbox is knackered and needs replacing. He said it is possible for a gearbox to be working fine one day and pack up over night. IS THIS CORRECT ? Also is this possible just having been told its just come back from a rolling road tune??

Those boxes can leak fluid if they're left without running the engine for any length of time, (from a couple of days sometimes), so that could account for the low fluid level. If the fluid is low it won't engage gears, or at least will have delayed engagement. It is important to use the correct M2C-33F or G fluid. Any slip will cause the clutches to overheat. Have you lost all drive? (Forwards & backwards).

The piston seals in the clutches can fail at any time, so yes, it is possible for it to pack up overnight, if those seals are the cause of your problem.

You don't really have any way of knowing what's been done to the car during the restoration, or during the rolling road tune.

Hi, I agree, it may have been OK in general use pottering about under no great pressure but a couple of power runs on a dyno may have been enough to tip it over the edge, It would have turned its toes up sooner or later.

yes.... lost drive forward and reverse. its just slipping with very minimal movement. What I'm finding difficult to understand is how it can be put on the Dyno (rolling road) taken up to high revs for a long period of time for tuning without any issues, driven back, parked up and knackered the next day ? The resto work was just body and cosmetic, engine and gearbox was not removed. There was no signs of any leakage of fluid on the garage floor or the garage would of mentioned something. Can't help but think there was some kind of negligence on behalf of the garage simply for not checking the fluid level which my have caused the problem. or would I be wrong in thinking that ?

It's unusual to lose all drive, but there are things that can cause it. If the level is correct now, and that's what you've got, then you're not going to find out any possible cause without further investigation. Is there any noise when it's trying to drive? Does the speedo work when trying to move forwards?

not sure if the level is correct now. I left the car at the garage so I can do some investigating, ie speak with people like yourselves. I know there was no noise when trying to drive. the speedo was working when the vehicle was moving. I will ask if the level is topped when I speak to him om Tuesday. worst case what price am I looking at for a new or recon box.
