Borg warner DG gear box conversion

I have a P6 with a Borg Warner 35 auto box but I also have a classic jag with a Borg Warner DG gearbox that has a column mounted gear change, The idea is can the gear change be moved to a floor mounted change? .

I presume you want to make the jag floor change, not to try to fit the DG box in the P6. The latter is going to be a load of work even if it's possible at all.
If that's the case then I can't see any reason at the moment why not, but what I would do is some research to find any car with a DG box and a floor shifter and then you'll know it's possible and you can try to obtain the parts and move on from there.

I owned a fully restored 1966 Daimler V8 mark 2 , several years ago.
I did most of the restoration myself over 2 years.
I remember that to get the column gear change in exactly the right spot to correspond with the column change marked positions, required a lot of under the dash adjustments.
There are several adjustment rods , with a cup and ball on each end , for infinite adjustment. It took a long time to get it just right.
I assume that your jag has exactly the same setup hidden under the dashboard?
To alter this to respond to a floor mounted gear-change would be the most difficult job ever, (in my opinion).
Perhaps if you joined a jag forum and asked , you may find a person that had even done the job before?
That may be your only hope!

May the force be with you...

I had better explain , I am a paraplegic and as such I use hand controls for braking and the throttle. This means if I I need move the gear selection I have to put my left hand across the steering wheel so as to move the gear leaver as my right hand would normally be on the brake. As you can imagine this is quite a problem. Try to imagine a parking situation where I am going from forward to backwards several times ,I put the car into neutral .move the steering wheel and then back into gear. I did a search and thee only car I could find with a floor change was an old American Buick. And yes the gear change set up is the same as the Daimler.

And that won't have had a DG box in it, and ideally a selector from a DG equipped car will ensure the throw of the lever matches the throw of the lever on the box, which could be a real problem if the distances between the positions are unequal.

It won't be an option for you I'm sure, but probably the easiest way to get what you want, even though it's a load of work, would be to fit a BW65/66 box from an XJ6 and use it with it's matching lever. That should go into a Mk2/S-Type/420 reasonably easily.

Hi there John gosnell,
Now that you have explained your situation , I can fully understand your predicament. Trying to do a reverse shuffle must be a nightmare in a busy car park.
Harvey p6 knows what he is talking about , that may be the only reasonably cost effective way to proceed.
Good luck, a jag forum may be of help too, lots of advice and leads to the gearbox needed?

Hi peter
the problem with changing cars is that I would probably have to go to a lot newer car possibly a xj6, Plus the existing jag has had a 3 year restoration which my son did most of the work ( I promised him the car on my demise) on it . I Know I have not mentioned it but I love my p6 (automatic) which I have had almost 10 years. The P6 has also been modified for me to drive she's just great a totally under rated car.

I can see why you wouldn't want to get rid of the car.
I've always thought the PNDLR selector pattern was odd to say the least, P & N being next to one another seemed pointless, and DLR seemed positively dangerous. Turns out (after a google) that it was actually banned in the States for that very reason, and PRNDL was introduced to replace it, which was far superior.
Lots of early yank cars had that pattern though, including Buick as you mentioned earlier, but most of those would have been column or pushbutton change. Pushbutton could be an option for you.

As a further thought on this, Rover P5 Mk1&2 had the DG box, and from a quick look at some pics it would seem to be fitted to the LHS of the column, so if that is the case, the selector would match your box, and you may be able to fit that to the LHS of your Jag column, and move the indicators over to the other side. The P5 lever, linkage and nacelle should be pretty easy to get too.

Harvey, what you have suggested has crossed my mined. The Mk2 jag has the gear selector on the right side of the column but I don't know about the P5 or the MK 1 jag, but further investigation is required. I contacted the manufacturer's of the hand controls to see if they can make a left handed unit but they did not think it was possible.

Regards John

The Mk2 jag has the gear selector on the right side of the column but I don't know about the P5

As I said, from what I remember, and pictures I found, P5 is on the LHS of the column, David Green probably has all the bits you would need to get started and see if it's a viable option.
