Bronze bushed rocker shafts

Hi all,

Having completed a modification on my 3.5L V8 where I bored out and sleeved the rockers with bronze bushes I would like to offer this to the community. The build thread is linked at the bottom.

Why bother?
1. Rockers and rocker shafts were always made of materials that do not operate together correctly at their bearing surface (ie interaction between rocker and shaft)
2. Even with new parts the slack between rocker and shaft is extraordinary in my opinion. This only gets worse.
3. Replacement standard rockers are of a very questionable quality, often loose on the shaft from new.
4. This slack creates a lot of noise ruining what should be a nice and quiet, hydraulic based, rocker system. This noise is created between rocker and shaft as opposed to rocker and valve/pushrod.
5. I wanted to modify the existing setup without buying V expensive performance parts, or the need to change the rocker cover for extra clearance.

Key features:
1. Direct replacement to existing rocker assembly.
2. Arrives assembled with Clevite bearing guard oil and can be fitted immediately.
3. Has identical geometry to stock rocker shaft
4. Uses original rockers. Aluminium or steel.
5. Shaft is replaced with a 20mm hardened shaft
6. Pedestals are new. Machined from HE30 aluminium
7. Bushes made from FB-092-20
8. All CNC machined

Construction
1. Rocker disassembled. Original shaft and pedestals discarded
2. New 20mm hardened bright steel shaft machined. This is slightly smaller in diameter than original
3. New pedestals machined
4. Rockers bored out slightly
5. Bronze inserts machined to micron tolerance. These include an internal radial oilway.
6. Inserts pressed into rockers
7. Acetyl plugs machined for shaft ends
8. Rockers reconstructed

Results:
1. Removes all the common noise from standard V8 rocker gear
2. No slack between rockers and shaft
3. Improves friction coefficient between rocker and shaft.
4. Fit and forget
5. Provides an extraordinary improvement to the overall sound of the engine. I was astounded.
6. Due to improved tolerances oil pressure loss to the top end is reduced, improving flow to the rest of the engine.
7. Guarantee of good fitting parts. No more worrying about quality of fit between new rockers and shaft.

Process.
1. Contact me to discuss your interest
2. Place your order
3. When the rocker is finished (made from a donor pair of shafts I will have in stock) send me your existing rocker
4. When received, your new one will be despatched. This keeps the time with your engine dismantled with no rockers shafts to a minimum.

Note 1: If you are particularly keen on using your existing rockers this is fine, the turnaround time will just be a little longer.
Note 2: You may also supply new rockers for modification if you wish.
Note 3: If you do not wish to supply your own shaft £40 will be added to the price to cover sourcing a second hand pair for donor rockers/springs/washers.

INTRODUCTORY PRICE FOR FIRST AGREED SALE £560. I will annotate here when this has been taken (+P&P)

NORMAL PRICE £760 (+P&P)

Ever thought of doing this for roller rockers?

Nice idea but I'd imagine that'd take a whole new level of engineering to do. The right materials and far better tolerances are one thing but I think the machining is fairly straightforward, certainly for someone with CNC abilities for the posts.

With the removal of the engine fan, mine's already as quiet or quieter than most modern cars. I just like the idea of a whisper quiet 50 year old car....
