BW35 Oil level

I bought my 1972 Rover p6 v8 about four months ago and I am very happy with the way it runs, however I have not been able to convince myself where the gearbox oil level is on the dipstick. I have followed the procedure Harvey has written about here but have not been able to see a level, only what I assumed was splash covering the whole of the measuring part of the dipstick.
Today I tried again but this time switched the engine off before checking but still the whole measuring part covered with oil and no level apparent.
I went for a walk and had an idea ( this usually happens out walking ) so when I came back I took the dipstick out and sprayed it with etch primer and dipped again. The oil level, when cold, is on the spring part of the dipstick, exactly 30mm above the high mark.
So anyone have any idea how much oil I need to remove and is there anything I should have noticed when driving it, but probably more importantly has it done any damage being overfilled

Thanks

Over the short term you won't have caused any problems with it being over filled. I'd drain off a couple of pints and see how the level looks then.

When running an auto box I had similar to you, could never get a usable reading. The only way I managed it was to do all the usual stuff, ie cycle the transmission, drive fwd / back etc, but instead of dipping with the motor running I would shut it off, then leap out and get a reading. I then always got a plain easy to read mark on the stick.

Thanks Harvey that was what i hoped to hear.
I am going over the car to see what jobs need done when I lay it up for the winter.
I am going to get it up on axle stands and spend most of the winter months underneath it so this will be an easy task to add to the list

Hi Cobraboy thats the procedure I tried in the end but the oil was still too high to read on the dipstick.
I am just glad that there is no damage done as the gearbox appears to perform ok
