BW65 problem

Good evening,

I have an Automatic P6 1974. The gearbox works well except that I have a freewheel overrun on 2nd gear.
Has anybody had this problem ?
Thank you for your help.

You shouldn't have any engine braking in "2" or SECOND gear in "D"
Do you mean that it is normal not to have any engine braking in 2nd gear ? When I drive at 40 miles/hour in second gear, if
I release the foot from the accelerator pedal, engine revs fall quickly at 800 rpm only and there is no "engine brake". Then if I accelerate
again, the engine has to reach may be 3500 rpm before something happens.
(Sorry for my bad english, and thank you for your very quick reply.)

Delayed engagement of drive can be caused by a low fluid level. Is there any delayed engagement of drive when selecting "D" or "R" at a standstill?

There is a delayed engagement of drive when selecting "D" from 2nd to 3rd gear, but I haven't noticed
any delayed engagement when selecting "R". The fluid level is correct.

If that's after getting to running temperature and running through the selector range with the car standing on level ground then that's the way to do it. The only other thing that can cause problems is a mismatch between the dipstick tube and the dipstick itself. If the dipstick is too long relative to the tube the level will always be low.

I have checked my fluid again, but I am not sure about the level. On my gauge there is only one mark "COLD" and
nothing else. Should I check the level just after running the engine from cold or should I wait a few minutes
before checking.

If you check the level COLD then when it's hot the level will be slightly higher and in your situation that will help the problem if anything.

Well, I have checked and top up the level to the Cold level and tried the car again , but it has not changed
anything. However, I was very careful when I drove my Rover and I think that..... I have no second gear
at all. When I drive in L1 the gearbox works well and I have a normal braking engine, when I drive in
"L2" it looks like I drive in L1 but without braking engine (over run free wheel). When I use the "D" position
from start, the first gear engages (but with over run freewheel) and I have to release a little bit the
accelerator and then the 3rd gear engages. When I use the kickdown it probably retrogrades directly from
3rd gear to the first gear (but without any engine braking).
I don't know if my explanation is clear enough for you to understand...

If you have lost SECOND gear then what you say would be true for the most part. If this is a genuine Rover BW65 then you can prove the loss of SECOND by pulling away from a standstill in position "2". If you have lost SECOND it won't go anywhere. If it's a non-Rover box it will pull away in FIRST and change into SECOND and shunt between the two, which won't happen if SECOND gear isn't there.

I have just tried what you said and this is what I have seen.
- From a standstill in position "1" , the car moves quickly and at 30 miles / hour, about 3000 rpm, with engine braking (no freewheel)
- From a standstill in position "2", the car moves quickly and at 30 miles / hour, about 3000 rpm , BUT without any engine braking (freewheel)

That sounds as though it is pulling away in FIRST gear when in selector position "2" which means that it isn't a Rover spec box, because a Rover box shouldn't do that. Either way it sounds as though you have lost SECOND gear.

The box has an aluminium plate BORG WARNER 65 serial number 013 6185

The problem with that is even though that may be the correct dataplate, it has had 46 years for someone to play with it and fit non Rover internals. (The valve block and Range Control Valve in particular)
