Can any one tell me or recomend speakers that fit behind the origional speakers (front and rear) or what the dimensions are and will another radio fit into the existing hole on the dash/consol? are they easy to fit and any other tips re the above. I have the origional radio still in place and working.
Oh , i have a 73 v8 auto.
Thanks,

Dickie.

Hi Dickie,

The radio hole is a standard din and any newer radio should fit.

The speakers are about 6.5 inches and are easy enough to get from decent car shops. front and rear are the same but measure them first before you buy them. you can it them to the doors if you want although most avoid this.

Modern radios need a constant live for memory, old radios like thoses with twisty nobs didn't. If you look at the wiring diagram for the car you will find a pick up point for the radio which is fused from fuse 23-24? (is on 4cyl check book for 8cyl). If memory serves correct is only live when the ignition is on. there is various negative points to conect to. what you need is a constant live, I took a feed from the cigar lighter by soldiering a length of wire with a bullet connector on the end.

The radio I fitted Had a ISO connector so I identified which wires where which and put bullets on the end and simply plugged into the wires in the car as described.

hope this helps. some people just hack into any old wires with those scotch lock type things which are ok but I would do a proper job. also keep the original radio.

Dickie.

I have fitted a JVC CD player in mine. The aperture was slightly smaller inside the dash but a very small amount of filing sorted it. It was dead easy!

The speakers, I fitted into the front glove boxes and they look fine. You still have storage space as well, surprisingly enough!

If you send me your email address, I'll email you a picture.

Cheers, Johnny.

I fitted an ex-vauxhall philips unit to mine, and a pair of Pioneer speakers into the sides of the console, makes for very easy wiring !

I'll dig out a photo and post it.

Pioneer 6 inch speakers fitted into side of center console, along with body colour stereo, TC badge, electric window switches and Nokia handsfree kit ....... Not exactly standard.

Hi Overover,

You need to remove the parcel shelf trim. However to do this you need to remove the rear seat squabs (cushions lift out, squabs secured by a screw at the bottom & one at the side / bottom corner, then push upwards to clear the locating lugs at the top) & then remove the rear quarter panels (screws at the bottom, then tug forwards).

The shelf trim may well come out now (lift) but you may need to remove the finisher below the rear screen also. This is pulled-off forwards from retaining spring clips.

The speaker should now be visible & can be removed.

Good luck!

Phil.

Thanks for your tips. Bit of a pain to get to but fortunately wiring was in place already.
Next job is replacing the stereo which looks even harder to get at.

Quick question chaps, I was thinking about fitting a CD player in the glovebox, and then fitting decent speakers in the standard front centre, and rear parcel shelf, and wiring these left and right. At the moment my P6 has a period Radiomobile fitted, which works lovely, and I'm loathe to remove it. I was thinking about wiring the radiomobile to the front speaker, for when the CD player is not in use.
Has anyone tried this? Also, does fitting the CD player in the glovebox have any adverse affect on the CD, as when the glovebox is shut, the CD will be in an upright position.

Cheers Chaps, I don't want to go and spend a load of cash, and find that I've goofed!!!!!

No reason why you shouldn't keep the Radiomobile wired up with it's own speaker. Not sure about the CD but different cars have different angled radio mountings so I wouldn't have thought it would be a problem even though the P6 gloveboxes are quite steep. Makro have Goodmans CD/radios (GCE7301) for £30+VAT at the moment if you don't want any frills or lightshows for not a lot of cash. I bought a couple a while back when they first had them for the 2200 & V8 but haven't fitted them yet. Must get round to it though I've got to get the 2200 on the road first.

I would measure the depth though before you buy. I found that some sets - DIN of course - were a little deeper and their wiring outlets foul the mechanisms behind the dash.

I fitted a proper 70's 8-track Motorola set and it's great fun, chomping away at the tapes. Currently listening to Dark Side of the Moon and Moody Blues 'Question', nice and bright.

You'll find the aperture right above the set is exactly two 8-track tapes in height, giving secure storage for four at a time

Where did you find your 8-Track Jason? I'd love to get one of those someday! (got an original Motorola in there at the mo).

Is the sound reproduction good?, I was always led to believe it was better than contempory cassette players.

Great listening choice you have there too btw!

Am I really hearing eight track? Incredible !! For my part, I will be going disk, fully modern. Floyd is available on disk,no hiss , no tape tangles. All the bugs have been worked out on the modern systems.
Or even a remote player and amp located in the trunk as in my Taurus.
Keep an open mind.

Well I did actually have a Sony Minidisc player in my '72 3500S. It fitted in quite nicely too and played Floyd, Rush, Led Zepplin etc most of the time!.

I like the idea of an 8-track in my current 'S', which is not a daily runner, just for the giggle of having an interesting period stereo in a period car really.

Peter,
I think eight tracks ran, sorry run, at a speed of 3 3/4 inches per sec and cassettes at 1 7/8 inches per sec so reproduction much better!
A nice period extra!
Regards, John.

(Dickie sorry for hijacking the thead a touch...)

John, Peter,
yes the deck is a great laugh - especially when listening to a longgggg prog-rock number and right in the the middle of a chorus - *loud clunk* - it changes track and carries on...
The sound 'quality' on my deck is bright, ratty, but fine for me, considering the wind noise in a P6 V8 at speed! Yes, the dynamic range is short and the bottom end is muddy (like my master cylinder feel) but it's bright and fine, considering age (I bought it for a score, fitted in minutes, and can fleabay it when finished with). After all, if we wanted 80's discs with 00's tech, what are we doing with as '63 design British car?

Dick.
Of course I have an open mind, I drive my 'moderns' with today's contemporary set-up every day to work, yet I happily listen to 50-years breadth of music. The P6 is pne of my 'period alternatives' that I enjoy. Funnily enough my 8-track keeps playing while my CD units jump tracks when hitting road imperfections. BTW I have a converter to wire a good'ole jack plug input, so in-plugs the iPod and off I go, mp3s of Moodies, Hendrix, Uriah, et al.

I get more and more peed off with CD's every day.
They skip, stop, stick in a way tape never would.
Tape definately had its own set of problems, but I find it carries on playing with "faults" where a cd would be only fit for the bin.
Solid state (memory cards etc) would be my prefered storage method, but most of the time you then have to put up with the horrible MP3's, which don't even sound as good as the old tape deck.

I'm an IT manager by day, but I'm sick of having digital technology rammed down my throat when the analogue equivalent was superior.(in my opinion)
My latest moan is over the digital TV take over, is it me or is digital TV about 1/4 the quality of a decent analogue signal ?

Is that why What Hi Fi rave about amplifiers with valves ?
Hi Fi enthusiasts seem to think vynil LP's are better than CDs
The old days when you'd turn on the TV and it would have to warm up....
Webmaster , suppose you are not rushing out to buy a HD ready LCD ? Prefer the old CRT ?
I've never had any problems with car CD players, the radio/cassette/Cd player seems to the most reliable bit of electronics in my cars

/sysadmins eh :;):

appreciation of analogue grabs me too, odd that... Decent CRT is not leaving my lounge for some time looking at the grotty images I'm watching people buying into ???

Uh-oh am I becoming a grumpyoldman? surely not.

As I meant to say, Dickie, chose the unit you want but check the depth. Blah Blah but I do think a modern deck in a 60's dash looks daft, so maybe best make the best of the pair of glove boxes. Enjoy whatever you choose :)

hi all, I have recently removed an original 8 track from my p6 as fitted by rover in '71' I also have a box of about 20 odd various tapes to go with it from the 70's/80's. I was going to put it on ebay, but as this thread has started, I will let any interested members have the first option on buying it!! I am in the bristol area, but I will p/p it at cost price to anywhere. 'E' me if youre interested
