carbrettor icing

Hi, does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on carb icing?

My 1973 3.5 p6 auto keeps doing it and makes driving during the winter almost impossible. :( :(

Yes, start with a layer of marzipan followed by a nice buttercream....

Is that not what you meant

You could run trunking from the air cleaner inlet over to above the exhaust manifold so that you're drawing warm air in, or fit the SD1 air cleaner and hot/cold air valve and trunking complete.

Not the same as the P6. You'd need the housing, trunking and thermo flap, and possibly the elbows as well, plus there's a racket the flap fits on to, and a hosung that fits above the exhaust manifold, which you'd have to make or modify to use on the P6.

Years back mine used to ice up, but within a couple of seconds at a standstill it would warm up enough to restart. Inconvenient, but not the end of the world.

If the engine isnt warming up your carbs will stay cold. Sorting the temperature problem may make the other one go away?

Hi Steve,

How much choke do you have to use and for how long after your engine starts?

If your thermostat is stuck open, then that will certainly slow down the warming process. The reason coolant flows through the manifold is largely to aid in fuel atomisation, but even so, your engine should still run when you first start it. Afterall, all engines are cold initially, so if there is a problem after that, I would be inclined to look at the carburettors and the choke mechanism.

I'd agree with what everyone has said, if it wont run in the cold something needs sorting.

I'd whip the thermostat out and check it (carefully) with a thermometer in a pan of boiling water to see at what temp it actually opens. It should be close to the value stamped on it.

If all ok then refit (with jiggle pin at the top).

As others have said too - check the water connection on the carb tower is clear and flowing coolant...

Good luck!
