Change Speedo bulbs

How can I get behind the speedo to change the illuminating bulbs of a 1975 2200 SC with a strip speedo. I'm not understanding the Haynes instructions. Have undone 2 screws at the top but it won't come out enough to get my arthritic fingers in. Haynes says something about removing the end finishers which are presumably the square chrome plates, can see how this could be done to get them off, but not how I could get them back on. Anyone used LED's for here?

I fitted LEDs to my strip speedo instruments a few years ago. Made a huge difference to light level but you lose the dimming feature if you replace them all. As H says, you need to also disconnect the speedo cable, easiest done from under the dash, but can be a real pig to get back on.

Thanks guys, in a moment of inspiration removed the black mat from the parcel shelf, the grotty formica woodlike trims around it and pulled plastic shelf out from under the speedo (only 4 screws you need a long thin screwdriver to go underneath for the one just behind the speedo) the mastic around the heater vents soon gave up and the shelf slid out quite easily. This gave enough room to twist the speedo to get to the top rear and lever the bulb holders out with a screwdriver. One bulb is directly aligned with the 30 on the strip dial below, the other is above the 90. One dud bulb another blackened, so off to Halfords but no screw in bulbs, so eBay. Can see what you mean about the speedo cable access though glad I was only doing the bulbs - probably designed by the guy who did his best to make the rear brake pads so inaccessible
