Choice of electric fuel pump.

Does anybody here have any experience/advice/recommendations concerning universal electric fuel pumps? Brown Rover's mechanical fuel pump is leaking from the stripped inlet thread, a spare I tracked down has the same problem, so I think I'll just blank it off and install an electric pump. They're available at the local parts shop for about $75 (Goss brand), or by the billion on the Bay from about $18, but I'm not sure which way to go.

From what i've heard the problem with electric fuel pumps is that they usually deliver too much pressure for the carbs... I seem to remember there were some good front mounted ones someone posted, or you could get a rear mount one with high pressure and get a valve to reduce the pressure...

Aha! I've noticed that there are pumps described as low pressure for carburettor applications, so that shouldn't be a problem if you choose correctly. The Goss pump sold by my local independent parts guys has a pressure regulating valve, too. I want a front mounted pump that can be easily plumbed in roughly where the old one is.

Hi Warren,

Which ever pump you wish to go for, do ensure that it is designed for the location in which you wish to place it. Some pumps are pushers, which must be located as close to the fuel tank as possible, whilst others are pullers, and can be placed some distance from the tank. The downside of the latter is that fuel vapourisation, should that be a problem in New Zealand, will not be rectified by using such a pump. On the other hand, a pump near the tank will cure all such problems.

I fitted a Facet electronic pump to my Rover over 20 years ago which I run in series with the mechanical unit. Granted most of the time it is switched off, but it has always been reliable, running whenever I wish it to. It delivers the correct pressure and no regulator is required, even in the situation when both pumps are in operation.

Ron.

My P6B has a Facet pump with a regulator.

Works fine, seems reliable, BUT - damn it's noisy. You can hear it ticking away over the idling engine, despite it being mounted under the rear seat on rubber mounts. It might just be my one, but I'll be looking to change it sooner rather than later.

Thanks all. It seems there are a few traps for unwary travellers, so it was definitely worth asking here before plunging in. I'll save that Huco unit in my eBay wishlist, and have a chat to the boys at Gales Super Cheap about the Goss, and then contemplate my navel for a day or two. I will report back in due course.

Mine [ facet ] is under the rear too - always been a noisy blighter from birth in '72.
Have they improved over the years in the quiet department ?
Never had any problems with it in the performance dept incl the dreaded vapours .. 40yrs of loyal production is pretty good really . All I have ever done is clean off the solid filter in it a few times when I remember to do so and just put it back in .

I must be lucky, my facet is so quiet I cant hear it at all with the engine running. It is pretty old (was factory fitted to my Land-Rover in 1984) and is on rubber mounts so those things may help :D

Cheapest way to get one is via this eBay seller:

Ordered, Nick. I don't have to pay VAT (being an overseas purchase) so he's charged me 40 quid + post. It was easiest choice in the end. The Goss pump was a pusher, and nobody else locally could come up with a puller.

Now, any recommendations on where to pick up 12V from?

My car currently has its second Huco puller pump and I'm happy with mine. The old one packed in after +/- 25 years of service in a sporadically used car, possibly from having lived upright all its life. I can't tell the difference between the two, they've both been very quiet. They should be mounted horizontally according to instructions. Mine sits behind the LHS outer headlight bowl and had a dedicated switched +ve and a tiny override switch that came from a Spitfire (the flying kind would you believe).

I'm pleased to see the good reviews continuing to come in after I've paid the man. With my usual luck, at this point the forum would burst into life with dire warnings about the inferiority and general unpleasantness of Huco pumps.
