Choke knobs.

My choke knob was recently broken by an over enthusiastic vehicle electrician, god bless him! I have managed to get myself a new hook type one, I didn't realise they were that rare. I have decided to tackle it today however could I get the origional out, no chance! According to the manual there is a specialised spanner just to get the thing out, the haynes says use an open ended spanner but how on earth you are supposed to do it I have no idea. Any suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks,
Martin

I've done it twice but both times I had removed the centre console to do other jobs as well. It doesn't actually take that long to get it out.

Have you removed the speaker grille and any speaker in there?
Once you have it is possible to access the rear of the cable.
If it has been adapted to a single cable, you can just replace the inner dead easy.
If you still have the twin TC type, you will have found the 1 into 2 joint section in the engine bay passengers side if its still there.Pull it apart to separate the 2 sections.
You will need to remove the warning light switch which is clamped on with 2 screws, you should be able to turn the whole assembly enough to get at them.
I used a set of very long nose pliers to hold the inner securing ring and twist the hook a little gradually loosening it,fiddly but possible.
When you eventually withdraw the cable, remember to attach som to pulle string to the engine bay end to pull through the bulkhead so you can then attach it to the new one and guide it through.

I have used a spark plug socket, the type that has a hex on the back end of it. I imagine you could use the original Rover toolkit one too. Disconnect the cable from the engine and pull it through into the interior, remove the speaker grille and speaker, remove the choke light switch then slip the plug socket over the cable. The extra length gives you something to grip on to.
