Choke lock in place?

My choke doesnt seem to lock in place with twisting the knob - it untwists as soon as released. Both it and the reserve are plain round knobs...was this normal for a 74 S2?
thanks

No, it should lock.

What typically happens is the lock nut behind the dash fascia becomes loose and the whole assembly rotates giving the appearance of a non locking choke knob.

Check out the rear nut.

It could well be the locking collet that’s worn. There’s a thread on here about that - I’ll have a proper look when I can.

Make sure the actual cable is set so it is not acting as a torsional spring and acting to unwind it . Disconnect wire at carb end and rotate it the way it needs to turn to lock and retighten clamp

The choke base is a bit loose on the facia. With a mirror (on a telescopic stick) I can see a largish brass nut in the back, but sign of a choke light switch. Not too worried about the switch, but like to tighten the nut up - if brass sounds original, any idea what size it might be please?
thanks

Nobody has a choke assy out of the car to get the size of the nut ? Once I have that I will make a tube spanner to fit and tighten it up.
thanks

I think from memory when I did mine I used a pair of long nose pliers ( it was a long time ago) but now days you can get some very wide opening adjustable crescent like beasties that are only about 100 mm long.

Hi, OEM or aftermarket not all nuts are the same size (such is life:rolleyes:) so as it's loose undo it, move it back down the cable a bit and measure across the flats and take it from there.

I studied some pics of choke cables and reserve tap cables and measured the size of the mount just behind the knob, and guessed that 3/4 would be close to the nut size. Then I got lucky and found a tube spanner of 3/4-5/8 on a shelf. Cut in half, slotted, bit of filing to get the slot just big enough to go over the cable. Bingo, it fitted well enough to tighten up the nut, now all works as documented! Smaller hands and better access would make this a lot easier, but its done for now.
When I looked up the tool in the WSM, its described as suitable for the choke and 'reverse' cable nuts....
