Clobbered - while waiting at a junction

IMG_0693.JPG IMG_0719.JPG IMG_0718.JPG Hit by the rear end (wheel) of an artic while waiting at a junction.

Surprising how quickly repair costs add up for something which looks straight forward....

Quick patch up and back on the road.

Oh bad luck. :(
I hope the truck driver stopped and accepted blame.
More to the point, I hope the damage is limited to bolt on panels - rear wing and bootlid?

Evening,

On this ocasion no - it was an overseas truck (Estonian number plate and LH drive) and it didn't stop, but there is CCTV footage which might help.

The respective insurance company has been informed but this situation is helped because I do have an agreed value in place. On face value, it doesn't look much. The rear bumper needs replacing and the initial decision was whether to try and source a good one and /or re-chroming one. Stainless steel looks like a good option here given the re-chroming costs, it is a daily driver exposed to all weather conditions and also the longevity of a new stainless steel unit, not to mention a potential price saving.

But then factor in a rippled rear valance, bumper irons, rear tail light and reflector assemblies, replacement rear wing and prep and re-spray, local paint scratches to N/S wing and boot due to where the boot was shifted at impact (plus labour / VAT) and costs add up considerably.
As you mention, what looks to be not so bad could have been a potential write off decision!

real shame .as I too have 3500 in Cameron green (though with standard wheel trims.)
I can imagine effect at time! thinking of getting a dash cam fitted later as all sorts of stories around these days. my nephew was overtaken by an articulated. lorry ( Dutch) which failed to see him and changed lanes near Dartford crossing. causing him to be pushed along sideways in front of it at over 50 mph. heart churning. a passing driver managed to get lorry drivers attention to stop as driver could "not see" below front screen.
later driver claimed my nephew changed lanes in front of his lorry! if it not for a witness stopping to exchange details it seemed more likely he would be paying the Dutch driver to fix the truck! not easy as insurance company wasn't helpful at first.
DO check for CCTV locally as. you may? have a camera scanning area and capture evidence :) good luck.
another person I know was waiting at roundabout to move forward when car in front went ahead a way then reversed back impacting his car. he was stationary but driver claimed he had hit him in rear and his. 3 passengers had neck and back injuries!
after exchanging. insurance details etc ( Romanian driver) he had. presence of mind to check for CCTV cover on that junction. Essex Highways had this and it clearly showed he was stationary and car reversing into him. he managed to get a copy sent over to his insurance company. I think last I heard was driver and passengers had decamped to ..somewhere untraceable. be careful out there . they are out to get you.

Hi Classicalgreen,

You're right, a dash cam is the way to go - surprising modern cars don't have it as standard now, cheap and un-noticeable (or maybe they do) - Probably one front and rear needed.
No news from the insurance company to say if they have even viewed the CCTV footage let alone perused the lorry driver, although they have accepted the repair estimate.
The problem with the above is that my insurance premium takes a big hit on this and my other cars given I am still considered to be at fault and my excess lost, if the other driver cannot be traced and their liability demonstrated. The insurance company know that I am not at fault but unless proven otherwise I technically still am.

They aren't fitted as standard as they are illegal in some countries e.g. Austria and heavily discouraged in other places like Germany and Switzerland.

Daft but there you are.

wasn't aware illegal at all! cannot see any logic in that . surely unless camera gets in visual way of driver by blocking screen excessively ? it must assist in event of incidents.
I will be getting one for my birthday next year ( 2 cars) so hopefully each car will get one fitted. front and rear cameras. are I think these days almost essential.
also helps when any insurance incident occurs such as roundabout where driver if front moves off then does emergency stop or even reverses back and claims you drove into him while he was stationary ( goes on a lot ) with passenger claims for whiplash etc
if we remain in EU ( extremely likely given pressure by retainers.media , business and MP's etc ) it may be worth seeing if car organisations such as AA .RAC and classic car clubs etc can. push a few MEP's to get it raised at the commission level.
After all as EU. is now insisting w have to have ALL cars. fully insured even when off road in private garages etc for elf and safety ..then surely a camera is even better for recording things when anything does occur?

Have a look here (section 8) for legality in Europe. The ones that ban them quote data protection law, which is probably correct if you take it that far, misuse of dashcam footage has already surfaced on YT so sooner or later it'll get raised in the courts then we'll see which way the courts decide over here. That's also why you can't get Google Streetview in most of Germany (which is a real pain when you are trying to look into somewhere for use with a wheelchair - hills, cobbles, etc!).

You can, people want their privacy protected but at the same time want protection against criminals like the crash for cash crowd, but in many ways the two are incompatible! It's also interesting to note the differing interpretations of the same law throughout the EU! If you ever watch that car crash programme that's on the box nost of their dashcam foorage is from Russia!

It is also very helpful if you are planning a route for a truck and want to make sure that it will fit under the bridges. There is a bad thing with knowing how to use it for this, you get truck driver friends calling for directions. But he has been very helpful letting me use his work shop to work on my Rover, so I happily oblige!

I believe that there are road atlases out there for truckers with low bridges marked, there are also trucker-specific satnavs but they both cost more than the standard version and therefore they don't want to pay for them. Now network rail are starting to sue truck drivers for bridge bashes perhaps they'll start to buy the correct maps/navs.
