Crank rear oil seal replacement

My bellhousing is leaking engine oil so I’d like to replace the rear crank seal. I did this job on my previous P6 but that was easier as the engine was out and receiving a full rebuild. my first question is whether my car will have a rope or a lip seal? It’s a 1974 V8 manual. My second question is whats the best way forward for replacing each seal type? Gearbox off I’m assuming. Am I better to take the crank out (I know the rope seal can be a pig with the crank in pace). Any tips are much appreciated!

It’s a 1974 V8 manual.

It should be a lipseal. Check the engine number, suffix A are rope seal, suffix B onwards are lipseal. If it is a lipseal you are supposed to use an installer to protect the seal as it goes over the back of the crank. It can be replaced with the engine in the car but ideally the sump should come off and the mains caps slackened.

Make sure the engine breather system is in perfect order before replacing the seal.

Thanks again Harvey. It’s actually a suffix c engine. The gearbox is our and the car is up in the air. Next job will be the Sump off and main bearings caps loosened. Just waiting for the new seal. All breathing in good order. Thanks again.
