de dion tube removal

In the past I have followed the WM and removed one rear elbow to remove the dion tube, but it crossed my mind that you may be able to remove it if you can compress it enough to get it past the the fixed studs in the elbow.
Has anyone tried it this way?
If so did you need to leave the weight on the rear wheels? possibly undo one drive shaft to diff on one side to splay the elbows apart ?

grateful for any ideas

No need to remove any elbows or driveshafts, or keep the weight on the wheels, with the base unit supported and the suspension hanging it will come out easily. It's no different to replacing the boot.

I am in the process of changing my old leaking and corroded dion tube.
I have stripped down two spare grease filled tubes so as to pick out the one in best condition.
Now on pulling them apart one was fitted with the 2 felt seals (one either end) and with the metal retainer washer
The other tube had only one felt seal (rubber boot end) and nothing at the other end.
now as far as I see it it only needs one (rubber boot end) as the other end is sealed with a gasket and metal disk so should not let ingress of dirt.
Is it a matter of helping keep the tube lightly lubricated by fitting two. I will say that the WM is a clear as mud and the parts book even worse.
Any ideas welcome

For the last two boot replacements I have greased the tube and put it back together with quad oil seals. This seems to work fine. For the second tube I used Castrol rubber grease. That way the rubber boot will not degrade if it gets grease on it.

Thanks for that ,I have decided on two felt seals (one either end)
The worst that can happen is sieze up and have to be removed again.
