Hi, Quick question. If my P6B has a BW35, and my Mk2 Cortina has a BW 35, why are they the same model number - surely they're different internally?

Hi, Yes they are different internally, valve block internals and the number of plates in the clutch packs as two examples. The details are in the serial number on the ID plate which designates which vehicle it's for, Harvey has a more encyclopedic knowledge.

They are all BW35, it's the Series number that determines the origin of the box. Differences include main casings, tailshaft housings and tailshafts, sumps, input shafts, converters, front servos and clutch pack sizes for starters.

So 35 is more of a design model which is adapted in the physical parts to an application....?

IIRC the first application in the UK was in the Daimler V8, after that it became a replacement for the DG box after it was realised how dodgy the DG selector pattern could be, and it subsequently went on to be fitted into most RWD autos, and a few FWD ones as well, in the UK, the basis of the box being basically the same throughout. If you want to know more google may be of assistance, as I can't remember everything and specifics in particular.
