Door Trim and wing window

Not too bad.

First prise the centre finisher from the winder control knob and unscrew it to remove.

Next withdraw the spring clips to remove the window winder and door handle. I use some wire shaped as a hook to pull them. Just be careful that they don't go flying off, and then you spend ages trying to find it on your driveway. Ask me how I know

Remove the screw underneath the arm rest, and then the two larger ones, and remove.

Remove the locking button by unscrewing it.

Slide back the veneer and remove the retaining spring clips

IMG_5239.jpg

Remove all screws holding the waist strip, and remove.

Carefully prise out the retaining clips all around the trim pad...

But...
If you mean the small quarter light window, then the 2 lugs on the end of the winder have probably snapped off. You can just make them out in codekiddie's 2nd photo. You can replace the knob without stripping the door down but the mechanism may have become stiff which is what caused them to snap in the first place. I can't remember if it's possible to lubricate the mechanism without stripping the door down - anyone know?

Be careful with the formica strip though. It'll break easily when coming off or if it isn't pushed back in properly and centered.

Just out of curiosity. I know people have remade the door cards in either hardboard or ply. Has anyone tried it in ABS or similar plastic and then covered it in vinyl?

The reason is obvious with regards to water and warping.

It'd work, I guess the issue is cost, I'm sure a sheet of hardboard is cheaper than the equivalent ABS. A 2500x1250x2mm sheet of ABS will set you back nearly £40! I'm not sure of the cost of aluminium these days, but I suspect that would be cheaper, as a thinner sheet would be strong enough.

If you use Tempered Hardboard, that is pretty waterproof. It's heat treated with oil and used in a lot of harsh conditions such as on boats. Although it still would be advisable to soak it in some rot proofer before fitting. Belt and braces jobby !

Yes I used this stuff and it works a treat. Basically it's a resin that soaks into your hardboard or wood: http://www.screwfix.com/p/ronseal-wet-r ... 00ml/63540

I think I'll stick with my plan for ABS though because what I actually want to do is use it as a former with a layer of Tecsound 50 but not radically make it thicker so it still fits in with the door capping. Secondly either hardboard or ply can get damp and smell - ABS will remove any of these odours.

That sounds a good idea.

My problem is the little vent window, wont wind in and wont wind out, its stuck shut, its hot and i need it open

As per below, pulled this out, screwed it back in and nothing....

What would i need to do to get the window open, what is on the end of the bolt that opens and closes it?

Thanks

Luke, the locating pins on the base of your quarter window winder have been broken off  That's why it won't open or close the window. You'll need to locate another one.

The picture of how to remove the pin from behind the interior door handle and window winder has been very useful thanks.
