downshift cable adjustment - should I ?

ref my last post I have been having some strange gearbox problems. In the Rover factory manual it states the down shift cable should have 10-20 thou inch clearance from crimp to nut. well mine has about 1/2 an inch. According to the book this cable will affect oil pressure in gearbox and change quailty etc. Before I try to adjust it I will need to get bushes for the throttle linkage, but even with bushes fitted the current clearance is going to be around 1/2 an inch.
IS the adjustment a usual routine adjustment when the milage creeps up? This would be a nice fix! (another problem however is my 2000 auto has the same big gap, but changes gear as smooth as you like, no clunks or anything? )))

Stall test: I have broke my test tacho(ordering a new one now!) but when I do a stall test in the V8 when the "noise" is present the car tacho only reads 1500 rpm. This apparently indicates the torque convertor is toast - when the "noise/fault" is present if you boot the throttle for kick down when on the move you loose drive, and of course its worse at lower speeds.
